All About Gaydar
What is gaydar?
“Gaydar” is a portmanteau of “gay” and “radar.” It refers to someone’s ability to tell whether or not other people are gay or LGBTQ+.
How do you know if you have gaydar?
The only way to know if you have it for sure is to test your track record of guessing correctly whether or not someone is LGBTQ+.
Who has better gaydar?
According to studies, gaydar is most common and accurate among LGBTQ+ people, who have lots of firsthand experience and knowledge about the community, and so can spot the subtle (and not-so-subtle) signs that someone else might be LGBTQ+.
Is gaydar real?
Honestly? No. While it’s true that there are certain traits, behaviors, and qualities that many LGBTQ+ people share, many of those are just stereotypes, and just because someone fits a stereotype doesn’t mean they’re LGBTQ+.
Is gaydar always right? Nope! Not even the best gaydars are right 100% of the time. Plenty of LGBTQ+ people don’t adhere to any stereotypes, while loads of cisgendered heterosexual people do have LGBTQ+ traits, so it’s impossible to know for sure whether someone is indeed LGBTQ+ without them outright telling you.
