- California’s state motto is “Eureka,” which means “I have found it.”
- California is also the largest U.S. state by population (approximately 39,000,000).
- Alaska is the largest state by land area (it covers 665,384 square miles).
- Rhode Island is the smallest state by land area (it covers 1,034 square miles).
- Delaware was the first colony to ratify the Constitution on December 7, 1787.
- Alaska and Hawaii were the last to officially become states in 1959.
- Each state has a nickname. For example, Missouri is “The Show-Me State,” Florida is “The Sunshine State,” and California is “The Golden State.”
- The lowest point in the U.S. is the Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park in California.
- The highest point in the U.S. is Denali (also known as Mount McKinley) in Alaska.
