Google Analytics is a free online program you can use to track how well your website is doing. Among the items you can see include: the number of visitors your website receives, where visitors are located, any keywords used to find your site, what browser visitors are using, how long visitors stay on your site, what page visitors use to find your site, and what page visitors are on when they choose to leave your site. All of this is valuable information in terms of search engine optimization, but before you can make use of it, you must first learn how to find your Google Analytics code and how to properly install it on your website.

Steps

  1. If you do not have an account, visit: Google.com/analytics to get started. Click the "Create account" option, and follow the on-screen steps to continue.
  2. You can do this from the "Overview" screen you will see after logging in.

  3. This will tell you whether or not the Google Analytics tracking code is properly installed and gathering information about your website.
  4. You will find a text box where your tracking code will be displayed.
  5. There should be a zone for this in website/properties and one for each web page you have created. Do not confuse (HTML) code with SEO. If you are using JavaScript or JS code, the tracking code should be placed between <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="INDEX,FOLLOW"> and closing body tag that looks like this: < /body > (without the spaces). If you are using the asynchronous code, you should place it directly before the closing head tag that looks like this: < /head > (without the spaces). You can choose which type of code, as they will both produce the same result.

      Tips

      • Google can take up to 24 hours before it starts pulling your website statistics into their database.
      • If your website uses a content management system such as WordPress or Joomla, there are plug-ins available for free that will help with installing Google Analytics' tracking code. These plug-ins will generate and install the code for you. As a result, you don't need to worry about copying and pasting the tracking code into the right place in your website's source code.
      • Finding the code for Google Analytics is something you will only have to do to install the code on your website. The code will always be there so if something happens to your website, you can install the tracking code again.
