Happy Friday y’all!
With thumbs up from the Haus crew, I’m happy to introduce a new community project for all of us to work together on
The content team has been experimenting with adjusting the table of contents from the default vertical format to a new horizontal format. This is achieved by using the __HORIZONTALTOC__
magic word, which needs to be positioned below the References section (where other magic words are placed).
There’s a list of 400 articles that the team’s script wasn’t able to cover. If you are interested in helping out, here’s what to do:
1. Go to the spreadsheet
.The list is split into 8 batches of 50 titles, which should make that number a little easier to digest and also save our fingers from the scrolling lol. Use the bottom toolbar to switch between sheets.
2. Choose a title and enter your username in column C to claim it.This lets others know you’re planning to work on it. Just like past edit-a-thons, try to limit yourself to max 10 articles at once to give others a chance to participate. That way you can take your time, and once you’ve completed your own batch, you can reserve more in the list.
3. Open the article in edit mode. Then scroll to the bottom of the wikitext to where the References and magic words are.
4. Insert the __HORIZONTALTOC__
magic word.Exactly how it’s typed here with all caps and all one word, so don’t abbreviate as htoc, otherwise it won’t function as it should.
For consistent positioning, please make sure all magic words are grouped together and placed below the References section and above the Quick Summary (if present), as shown below:

5. Document your changes and save.Enter your edit summary as “adding HTOC” or something similar, and publish.
6. Back on the spreadsheet, mark the checkbox in column D to show it’s completed.Optionally, add notes in column E if there’s anything else you feel needs attention later on. Then repeat with the next title.
Pro tip for anyone who’s comfortable with AutoWikiBrowser (AWB):There’s another method to speed up the work! Detailed instructions are in the sheet. Since AWB is a powerful tool and wikiHow doesn’t officially support or endorse its use, please only use it if you’re confident in your ability. Remember to always double-check your edits.
Finally, a few quick things to keep in mind:
- Keep an eye on the RC number and consider taking a break to let patrollers catch up if it gets too high. Since these are all wikiGnome edits that don’t need much scrutiny, we don’t want to overwhelm the RC queue, especially during peak periods when there are more important edits to review. If you’re an admin taking part, it’s a good idea to turn on autopatrol for this project.
- Feel free to also clean up any excessive whitespace or wonky formatting as you go. It won’t really visibly change the article’s layout for readers, but it’s still nice to keep things tidy for us editors.
- The AWB method can be finicky and there’s an anomaly with the module that I wasn’t able to fully problem-solve. Make sure to review the notes in the sheet, and mentioning again to double-check your edits before saving.
- 400 articles is definitely a looooooot. But it’s a marathon not a sprint, so do as much or as little as you want! I’m looking forward to watching the team effort, and checking off all 400 once completed is gonna feel sooooo satisfying

Any questions about this project, feel free to ping or message me! We got this, team!
