So I’ve had an idea bouncing around my head for a while, and that is the concept of shared drafts. The premise is that you can work with another contributor to modify the wording, format, and overall structure of an article before its publication. I’m working with @Melissaganus
to create an article, but it’s far from being ready for publication so it’d be useful to be able to create a draft that can be edited/accessed by multiple users. Maybe it could be as simple as creating an option to “Share this draft” when you’re editing it, or simply make it public.
Sounds like a nice idea! Thank you for proposing it; it would be nice if there were a peer review process for articles before they become published.
That ideas been thrown around several times, and each time I see it, its sounding better and better to me! What we always arrive at, is that it’ll be thrown into the system at some point, however.
Two thumbs up. This idea is high on my list of features I’d like to build.

Hm… There’s Google Docs… shareable… format-able… for free. Would it even be necessary to build a proprietary tool to do this? Couldn’t we just use whats already “out there” and available? for THAT matter… There’s the option of “review and track changes” in microsoft documents… you could email the document back and forth…?

Just going to throw it out there that Google Docs has some major reliability issues. I’ve been using it for years and more often I’m seeing the ‘Aw Snap’ error. I contacted Google and they said it was the doc problem rather than a server issue. Also, I’m seeing a lot more people transfer to things other than Microsoft Office. This all in regard, logging into things like email in this case can cause major privacy issues for some. The only reason I would prefer a wikiHow based tool is for the sake of promoting a bit more privacy and communication with edits for new users.
I support shared drafts fully. It is certainly high on my *great to have* list. Beyond that I would support shared tools and tool sets, but that is for a future thread.

I would say sharing folders via Dropbox, but that is also sharing email addresses, and I would be in agreement with Confusionist’s paragraph about privacy and stuff. I think it’s a tad unfair to provide personal information, even if it’s email, just so you can have a second or so opinion on edits or articles before they go public. This is what wikiHow is about… collaboration… right?

As I recall… some users created articles in their namespace before publication publicly. We discouraged this use of “sandboxes” because it quickly got out of hand content-wise and didn’t contribute much of a positive nature to the site. I suppose the pertinent question is “WHY do you need to edit the article before publication here?” If it is a thought process / content issue… you’d need to hash that out in your own mind before publication in any case. That can be done on paper or in whatever word processing software you are comfortable with. If it is a formatting issue… there are multiple editors… and NABbers… who can help you with formatting problems after your main content block is posted here. Sorry… I guess I just don’t see the need for a separate layer of collaboration on what is already, essentially, a collaborative site!

I agree with @Lois-Wade
. Their ‘sharing of ideas’ is good, but you can always publish the article, and then develop it by adding an inuse tag or so. And, about your question @Kimi123
, Just go to this link and start writing! http://www.wikihow.com/Special:CreatePage
However, I suggest you take a look at our writer’s guide before starting work on your article. You can find it here : http://www.wikihow.com/wikiHow:Writer’s-Guide
And the last, it’s great that you are participating in forums, but make sure that next time, you post on the right discussion. As you can see,we are having a different discussion here
Feel free to start one if you have doubts.
I like this idea a lot. I was working on an article with a friend, a little over a year ago, and we had to edit it on Pastebin LOL. I think it would be cool to put a tool in, so you don’t have to go to another website to edit stuff. June Days

I am new here and, early on, felt the need to share my extensive edits with someone knowledgeable who could point out problems and help me refine my words and format before publishing the edit. I could find no way to share except publicly, but would have welcomed the ability to share my draft.
