I think that when an article gets NFD, the authors should get a message on their talk page saying that. Recently someone complained about it and may have quit wikiHow. They had written some rising star articles and it would be sad to lose them or any other editors because they weren’t notified about their article being NFD.
If you place the same nfd tag on their talk page, it’ll give an explanation as to why their article has been nominated for deletion for that reason.
When a NABer chooses a Rising Star, an automatic message is sent to the author. But that isn’t the case with NFDs. You manually have to place the same NFD tag on the user’s talk page. Most of the times people remember doing this, but sometimes don’t. It is just that we need to remember to notify the user.
This is somewhat unrelated but while we’re talking about receiving TP messages, would it be possible to get a notification when someone posts on the discussion page of your article? I often find myself checking my articles to see if anyone has.

In regards to the original topic of this discussion, why is it that when a NAB chooses a Rising Star an automatic message is sent to the author but not for NFD? If it is done for a Rising Star, why not a NFD. No one would become angry that they didn’t know that their article was given an ‘‘Award’’ but they do if it gets deleted!
A rising star is selected using the NAB tool, so when a NABer selects an article as rising star, the system is programmed to send a talk page message to the author of that article. An NFD is, usually, added manually to an article. That is, by editing the article and then placing the NFD template. That is why when a NABer chooses a Rising Star an automatic message is sent to the author but not for NFD. It would be good to have an automatic message sent for NFD as well, but I don’t know how easy/ difficult that is to implement.
