I think I’ve come across a possible RC Patrol scripting error. http://www.wikihow.com/Special:RCPatrol Two patrollers are working. Patroller A and Patroller B both load a page (same edit) about the same time. Patroller A reverts a vandal and post a Quick Note to the vandal. This makes Patroller A the most recent contributor to the article. Just after Patroller A reverts edit, Patroller B takes the same action. Due to the sometimes sluggish response of the yellow revert bar message, Patroller B goes ahead and posts a Quick Note - assuming it goes to the Vandal, but it is instead posted to Patroller A’s talk page since they are now the most recent contributor to the article.

That would explain many erroneous messages I see posted to the person who reverted vandalism, rather than to an apparent vandal…

Great. Thanks for the bug report here. If anyone can send over an actual URL of a talk page note of when this took place it would help Travis solve this. Thanks again for the bug report.

Hey Mel, The quick note automatically goes to the contributor who made the biggest contribution to the page. I guess if the patroller did a revert, that makes them “tied” for biggest change. Then maybe it goes to the most recent contributor? I’m not sure, honestly. Like Jack said, can you post URL examples of when a quick note gets sent to the wrong person, as you find them? That way we can do some page history detective work.:slight_smile:Krystle

I think this was one: http://www.wikihow.com/index.php?title=User_talk:Harh017&diff=5476280&oldid=5475792 Looking back at the logs, it was probably in response to vandalism on the article How to Quit Soda Pop:slight_smile: http://www.wikihow.com/index.php?title=Special:Log&type=&user=&page=Quit+Soda+Pop Harri

Here’s one: http://www.wikihow.com/index.php?title=User\_talk:Catspjs01&diff=5470215&oldid=5470212

Krystal, that is neither intuitive nor helpful…

I wonder if that was a note left through quick note? Will look into it…

…twas not my choice. Thanks for the example. The more examples you find of quick notes getting sent to the wrong person, the better to illustrate that this setup isn’t working for us.

Hi there. The quick note should always go to the author that’s specified in the quick note pop-up, not the biggest or the most recent user. If there is only one edit, it goes to that one. If there are multiple editors, there’s a drop-down for multiple editors, and I think the most recent editor is selected by default. I’ve tried to reproduce this problem, but can’t. Here are the steps I’m taking as documented in this screencast. Perhaps I’m missing something? http://screencast.com/t/cA6CzHQmS

Ok - I think I figured out what’s going on. What happens is Person A makes a good edit, Person B makes a bad edit that is smaller, then Person C fixes the bad edit and sends a quick note to coach. The problem is that the quick note goes by default to Person A instead of Person B, because Person A made the bigger edit. Travis implemented a fix today that forces you to choose who you send the quick note to from the dropdown menu (when you’re patrolling changes made by more than one editor) instead of choosing it for you by default. This is in effect now. Here’s a quick screencast of how it works: http://screencast.com/t/Mey55QFR At the moment it has created a side effect bug that should get fixed soon.
