It’s such a shame we can’t even bring RCP down to zero because of this title thing. Ugh. Hoping it’s fixed soon, though.

Unfortunately these are a bit of a mystery to engineering. They generally have to be manually removed by an engineer. I’ve put in a request to have them removed and have someone look further into the cause and potential fix (though no promises on the latter!)

The simple solution: undelete the images, mark each page as patrolled, delete the images again.

Note I said mark each page
as patrolled. This is because the MediaWiki software also allows for individual patrolling of new pages, but we have a different system for that. Marking edits
and pages as patrolled are two different things.

I don’t think that option actually shows up on image pages… there are some namespaces where we don’t have the “Mark as patrolled” button even in traditional RCP, and I think the Image namespace is one of them. We’d probably need a script to clean that up.
Normally we don’t. But I have seen it before on undeleted files. I think a good first step would be to undelete the files that were deleted so at least we can even mark them as patrolled. Then we can mark those pages as patrolled, using scripts or otherwise, then delete those pages again.
I do not think there is anything wrong with having files being marked as “unpatrolled”. Why? Because we can treat new files in the same way that we treat new pages in NAB. Review the file’s licensing information and content. If the file is good, mark the file as patrolled. Otherwise, add appropriate tags then mark the file as patrolled.
I think this problem with files being marked as unpatrolled is only happening on wikiHow, probably because of some conflicting extension that staff is using. Maybe just add a skin or button to mark pages as patrolled. Or an image review tool. Or something.

I appreciate the ideas, but I’m going to leave this for an engineer. We do have a couple of ideas in the pipeline to help prevent this from happening in the future. Although I understand that it’s an inconvenience to not be able to get RC patrol down to 0, the good news is that it’s not affecting the functionality or usability of the site or tool

, do you think that maybe the issue is that the user who uploads the images originally might have had their patrols undone by PatrolCoach at a latter time? Because I’ve seen the PatrolCoach undo autopatrols to a user’s own user page when it unpatrols edits, so perhaps it also unpatrols the autopatrols that the deleted images got when the user uploaded them, and therefore creates this problem.

Yep, it’s likely an unpatrol issue - the goal will be to not have unpatrolling mess with images!
