History in a Jar When our grandmother, Bubbie Anna, fled anti-Semitism in her Polish village, she could hardly bring anything with her to Canada. She left behind her friends, her family, her work as a seamstress, her culture. But she fled with her mother’s pickle recipe in her coat pocket. For Bubbie Anna, pickles were a taste of home in a foreign land. For us, her grandchildren, they were the flavor of our childhood -- the unforgettable briny bite that is as vivid as Bubbie’s love.
