  • Question
Many of our church hymnal covers are starting to tear along the binding. Is tape the best way to repair this?
    Community Answer
I do not recommend using everyday Scotch tape for repairing tears in pages. Look for archival tape made specifically for this. It has a paper-like feel to it, isn't shiny and is acid-free or pH-neutral. At a glance it may look like thin, see-through white tape, but it goes on clear and will last a long time.
  • Question
What can I use instead of binder tape for a book that has separated from its cover?
    Community Answer
Tyvek is great for this. Cut up a Tyvek envelope, and use the flexible, neutral PVA glue from the craft store. This makes a strong, permanent and attractive hinge. Use parchment paper to isolate the repair.
  • Question
Should I use the same steps to repair a ripped off cover and spine?
    Community Answer
Yes! You'll use the same steps as described in the section about repairing a hinge. Just repeat the steps for both sides of the book.
  • Question
Can I use double-side tape if I can't find binding tape?
    Community Answer
Double sided tape is sticky on both sides. However, it doesn't tend to be really strong and, for a big book, might not be enough.
  • Question
Will this work for hardcover books that will be frequently read? Such as Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban?

The waxed paper protects the spine of the cover from sticking to the spine of the book block. Same for the cover and book block. It also helps to wick away any moisture so the pages won't wrinkle.

  • Question
Will this work on leather-bound books?
    Community Answer
You may have to use a glue specifically designed for leather, but yes, these steps can work on leather-bound books.
  • Question
What is the plastic or wax paper piece that is sliding between the spine cover and the text block?
    Community Answer
I think, from looking at the video and reading other sites, that the wax paper is meant to prevent the glue from moving into the spine from the text block. When you open a book, the pages are glued/sewed together, but they are not firmly attached to the center of the spine. If you do this with a hardback book, the book would not open properly. That piece of wax paper keeps the bound pages from sticking to the spine as the adhesive dries.
  • Question
How do I repair a book's binding if a lot of the spine is peeled down?
    Community Answer
I had that same problem, and found that using binding tape to stick the spine back together is quite successful. The one problem is that if your book has old parts of the spine sticking to the back of the cover the glue might peel off. In that case tape might work better.

  • Question
I am having trouble with the first step of gluing the tape into a T-shape. Is there a simpler method to repair a book's binding?
    Snakey006550
    Top Answerer
If you're having trouble with the T-shape, try this: Use non-adhesive cloth or linen tape and apply glue to it. If using adhesive tape, glue the spine first and then press the tape on. Cut a piece long enough to cover the spine, placing one piece vertically and another horizontally for a T-shape. Press it down and let it dry under a heavy object.

To restore a homemade leather cover, use leather glue or PVA bookbinding glue. First, clean the leather with a soft cloth. • Question
What type of paper should I use to replace spine labels?
    Snakey006550
    Top Answerer
Use acid-free or archival paper for spine labels. Good options include heavyweight paper (100-120 gsm), matte photo paper, handmade or textured paper, rice or mulberry paper, and bookbinding cloth with paper backing. Attach with PVA glue or double-sided adhesive sheets for a strong hold.
  • Question
Can I use craft glue to repair a textbook that fell out of its cover?
    Snakey006550
    Top Answerer
Craft glue is too hard and brittle for book repair. Use PVA bookbinding glue instead because it stays flexible. Remove loose glue from the spine and cover, apply a thin layer of PVA to the spine, align the pages, press the book under a heavy object for several hours, and reinforce the inside hinges with bookbinding or linen tape. This will make the book sturdy and flexible again.
  • Question
How can I fix a weak book spine before adding new pages to an old book cover I want to use for a journal?
    Snakey006550
    Top Answerer
To fix the weak spine before adding new pages: First, remove any loose glue or fabric from the spine. Cut and glue a piece of linen tape or strong fabric to fit the spine. If the spine is very weak, glue a strip of thin cardboard first, then cover it with fabric. Close the cover and press it under a heavy object until dry. Once the spine is strong, sew or glue in the new journal pages.
  • Question
How can I replace the cover of a dictionary with a missing cover, and what materials should I use?
    Snakey006550
    Top Answerer
Use strong materials and glue. Use thick cardboard for the cover, and wrap it with fabric, bookbinding cloth, or strong paper using PVA glue. Connect the spine to the covers with tape, glue the first and last pages to the new cover, and reinforce the inside hinges with tape for extra strength.
  • Question
How do I repair a book where the pages were originally glued to the spine, and the glue is coming undone? Should I apply glue directly to the spine without using a wax paper barrier?
    Snakey006550
    Top Answerer
You can fix it by reapplying glue. Remove any old, flaky glue from the spine, then apply a thin layer of flexible book glue (like PVA) along the spine. Place the loose pages back in order, close the book, and press it under a heavy object for several hours. If the spine is weak, reinforce it with bookbinding tape. No wax paper is needed since the pages should stick to the spine.
  • Question
Can I reverse a cracked spine on a paperback book?
    Snakey006550
    Top Answerer
You can't fully fix a cracked spine, but you can repair it. Check if pages are loose and fix them first. Apply flexible book glue, like PVA, inside the crack. Close the book and press it under a heavy object for a few hours. Reinforce the spine with clear book repair tape. This won’t make it new, but it will keep the book usable.
  • Question
Is self-adhesive binding tape effective, and what are some non-adhesive brands?
    Snakey006550
    Top Answerer
Most binding tape online is self-adhesive, which is good for quick fixes. However, non-adhesive tape is better for strong repairs since you can apply your own glue. Examples include Lineco binder's tape, which is linen tape for sewing book spines, and Tyvek tape, which is strong for reinforcing spines. You can buy them on Etsy and bookbinding stores like Hollander’s. Non-adhesive tape lasts longer and offers better control for repairs.
  • Question
Should I tape the first page to the inside cover, or should I replicate the original linen tape that connects the spine to the cover?
    Snakey006550
    Top Answerer
It's best to replicate the original structure as closely as possible. The original linen tape connected the spine to the cover because it provided strong, flexible support for the book's hinge. If you only tape from the first page to the inside cover, the repair might not be as durable, and the hinge could break again. To restore the book properly, attach the tape to the spine first, just like the original linen tape. Then secure it to the inside cover. If needed, reinforce the first and last pages with additional tape for extra support. This method lets the book open and close smoothly while keeping the hinge strong.
  • Question
What should I do if a book has a thread binding?
    Snakey006550
    Top Answerer
If a book has thread binding, it's likely sewn. To repair it, check if the thread is intact or broken. If needed, re-sew the sections using strong bookbinding thread, following the original pattern. Apply PVA glue to the spine for added stability and glue the cover back into place, ensuring the sewing stays intact. Press the book under a heavy object while it dries, being careful not to damage the threads or text block.
