How to Create a Stellar Team Name

Have a brainstorming session with the rest of the team.
First things first: thinking of a team name shouldn’t be a one-person job. Get the team together and start throwing out ideas. It’s okay if you don’t get anything solid at first; the point of brainstorming is to churn out as many ideas as possible, good and bad, so you have a foundation to work off of. Plus, brainstorming as a team can be another form of team-building, bringing your group closer together!

Consider the team’s goals.
Ask yourself (and your team) a few questions: What defines the team? How do you want to collectively present yourselves? What qualities set your team apart from others? What does your team want to achieve? These answers may help you choose a team name—or at least find a direction for your brainstorming.

Come up with words aligned with the team’s values.
What values do each of your teammates share? Think of a few specific values (sportsmanship, fearlessness, smarts, and so on) that you and your teammates want to project with the team name. Then, try thinking of popular icons, symbols, figures, or even animals representing those same values. For example, a team wanting to embody strength, valor, and bravery could use the term “knights” in their name. A team wishing to embody cleverness and cunning might use the term “fox” or “foxes.”

Think of specific terms related to the team’s sport, activity, or purpose.
If you’re trying to name a sports team, are there any sports-specific words you could incorporate into the name or play around with? For example, a basketball team could brainstorm with words like “dunk, “swish,” “jumper,” or “hammer.” Of course, this advice doesn’t just apply to sports teams; for example, a trivia team might brainstorm with terms like “curve ball,” “killer,” “funda,” or “junta.”

Come up with things your teammates have in common.
This doesn’t have to be related to the sport or activity the team is based around; it can be anything. Is everyone on the team a huge Spider-Man fan? Does everyone love Italian food—or tacos? Discuss each team member’s background, likes, and dislikes. Try to discover what you all have in common and what might be worth using in your team name; you may find some inspiration!

Punch up the team name with a powerful adjective.
Adjectives (words that modify or describe something else, specifically a noun or pronoun) can also help you project a particular “vibe” through your team name. You and the team can brainstorm adjectives or look them up with a dictionary or thesaurus. For example, you might use adjectives like “fighting,” “magnificent,” “victorious,” or “brawling” in your team name. See what you can come up with!

Keep the name from getting too long.
A long name is harder to remember and say in casual conversation—both for you and for any potential supporters cheering your team on. Make things easier on everyone involved by picking a name that’s relatively short and memorable.

Reach a team consensus on the new name. Once you have a solid idea for a team name (or a few of them), make sure the rest of the team is on board, too. After all, it’s important for everyone—or at least the majority of the team—to be happy with the name they’re using.
