Get rid of unwanted calls on Facebook Messenger with these simple settings
Are you tired of getting a ton of calls through Facebook Messenger? While there isn’t a simple switch to block all calls that come through Messenger, there are a lot of workarounds to limit who can make calls and what notifications you receive. Keep reading, and we’ll walk you through the top ways to block or restrict who can make calls, plus how to mute notifications in the app or on your device.
Easy Ways to Block Messenger Calls
- Select the Block option on a chat on the desktop Messenger site, and choose the Block calls and messages option.
- Restrict individual contacts to remain friends, but stop incoming calls and messages from your phone.
- Mute specific contacts that call you a lot to prevent notifications from coming through to your device.
- Disable incoming call sounds from the chat options when you log into Facebook on your computer.
Steps
-
Open the chat or contact you want to block. Open Facebook or Messenger on your computer, and click on the person’s name in the chat panel (on the left side of the window on Messenger or the right side of the window on Facebook). [1] X Research source
- This option is only available if you log in from a computer. If you block someone from the Messenger app, you will only have the option to block their whole profile, which requires you to unfriend them.
-
Click Privacy & support from the chat settings. Click on the 3 dots or dropdown arrow to the right of the person’s name at the top of the conversation. Then, select the Privacy & support option from the list to view the options.Advertisement
-
Select Block from the available options. There are multiple options under the Privacy & support menu, but click on Block from the list. A new pop-up will appear in the middle of your screen with additional options.
-
Choose Block Messages and Calls to stop them from contacting you. This is the first option that appears on screen. If you choose this option, you will stay Facebook friends, but they won’t be able to send messages or call you through the app. Select the option and then select Block to confirm your settings. - You can restrict someone using any mobile device or your computer.
- Restricting someone stops incoming notifications and prevents your phone from ringing if someone tries calling you.
-
Tap on their name or click on the 3 dots ••• . If you’re using an iPhone or Android, just tap on the person’s name at the top of your screen to see your chat settings with them. If you’re on a computer, then find the 3 dots in the top-right of the screen and click on them to open the settings panel.
-
Select the Restrict option from the menu. Look for the Restrict option under the Privacy & support heading. The icon looks like a chat bubble with a line struck through it. After you choose the option, a pop-up will appear explaining what happens when you restrict someone. Confirm the setting by clicking Restrict in the bottom corner.
- The other person won’t be notified when you restrict them and they will still appear in your Friends list.
- Restricting someone makes their conversation disappear from your chat’s list, and you won’t be able to message them.
- If you ever want to unrestrict someone, use the mobile app. Select the menu on the bottom left and then click Settings → Privacy & safety → Restricted Accounts. Tap on the person’s name and select Unrestrict at the bottom of the chat window.

-
Tap the person’s name or click the 3 dots ••• . If you’re using the mobile version of Messenger, simply tap on the person’s name at the top of the chat to open the chat settings. If you’re using the desktop version of Messenger, select the 3 dots in the top-right corner of the screen to open the chat settings panel.
-
Select Mute from the list of options. The Mute button looks like a small bell directly under the person’s name and profile picture.
-
Choose the length of time you want to mute the chat. If you only want to temporarily mute someone’s calls and messages, you can select one of the options, like 15 minutes , 1 hour , 8 hours , or 24 hours . If you want to permanently mute the conversation, then select Until I turn it back on . When you’re finished, click the Mute button to confirm your settings.
- Keep in mind that even though the person can still message you, you will not get any notifications from them while they’re muted. If you ever want to unmute them, open the chat settings and click on the Unmute button.
