Most of the time, they will just freeze up for a moment and then continue on with their day with no problem. If you notice your hamster behaving oddly in any way (limping, hunching posture, pain when touched, unusual aggression, or unusually inactive), contact your vet.

In terms of ethics, it's better to buy a hamster from a breeder that you know is responsible and breeds humanely, or adopt one. This is because hamsters from pet stores almost always come from mills. In terms of how healthy they will be and how long they will live, the same is true because mills lead to bad genetics. If you do decide on a pet store though, all of the big name stores sell hamsters that come from mills, so it doesn't make much of a difference which one you go to.
