I was debating where to put this but I think this board will do just fine. While patrolling lately I’ve noticed a lot of users adding images to articles that are tagged, including speedys, NFD’s, and copyvios. Being that the image picker app doesn’t show the article (only the title) when you’re using it unless you choose to open the article yourself, one would not notice that the article has an issue unless they choose to open the article…which it seems the majority of newer editors using the tool don’t always do. I think that this needs changed one way or another and I think it would be good to have additional input on it… It’s not worth an editors time to add an image to an article with no content, a speedy, a copyvio, etc. In fact, it’s probably not worth their time to add an image to a NFD, at least until a decision is made whether or not to keep the article. I see a few different options: 1: Remove any article with a NFD, copyvio, speedy, or other similar template, from the image picker tool. 2: Show the article within the tool automatically. 3: Notify the user within the tool any templates that are currently added to the article. 4: Keep it how it is now or do something else… Making a change like this would not only help the productivity level of wH editors (since adding an image to a copyvio or speedy is usually just wasting time) and make sure that articles that truly need intro pictures get them, it should also clear up recent changes a little bit so that patrollers don’t have to worry about these edits so often. Thoughts and ideas?

I personally agree the most with option 3. A good image could helpsave an article from NFD. (Emphasizing help, it probably can’t save an article by itself.) However, putting a picture in an article with NFD will most likely not change the outcome of voting. I have more opinions to share when the time comes…

@Maniac That’s a good idea. Is this a complete list of the templates you think the tool should ignore? NFD speedy copyvio

@Krystle Assuming that it currently doesn’t count out any templates, I’d say the following templates are probably all that need to be excluded: NFD speedy copyvio inuse copyviobot Additional user input is okay too…those are the only ones I can think of (while looking at the article templates page) but there may be one I missed. My focus is just on any article that really doesn’t need a picture added to it, to save users time that could be spent working on something else. I would also suggest doing the same thing with the video picker tool…for the same reasons.

Seems like a good idea to me. I’m not sure how hard this would be to do, but if we can do it, I think we should. Option 1 would seem to be the most elegant way to do this.

Great idea! I feel bad when I have to nfd an article after someone took the time to categorize it… Thanks for bring this up @Maniac !

I think it is a good idea to add intro images to articles with nfd tags on them because it improves the quality of the article. http://forums.wikihow.com/discussion/742/why-do-we-add-images-to-articles-that-are-being-deleted/#Item_13 I agree with not including speedy articles and copyvios.

Agree with the above, and I especially love this comment by @KatyBliss from the other thread.

The majority of NFD articles can be saved as seen here .

Agree with idea 3.

I suppose it doesn’t hurt, really, to put intro images on NFDs, and it might even have some benefits as pointed out in a few comments. Maybe we can just filter out these? speedy copyvio inuse copyviobot

Interesting…you know, before I made this thread I searched around and didn’t see the quoted thread, but it looks like it relates to a similar issue. Still, even after reading that, I still think it would be best to remove any article with NFD tags from the image picker tool and the video picker tool. While an introductory image might improve an article currently up for deletion, I really think the article would need more than simply an image in order to save it from being deleted. We don’t have a NFD reason of “no images”, so while an image might supplement the content of the article itself, what truly makes the article is the text and steps included. Editing the content of an article is likely to save it from deletion alone, but adding an image alone won’t I don’t generally think. If there’s evidence that images make or break the NFD voting decision of users then I might agree…but for right now I don’t think they have that much of an impact on the NFD process. It just seems to me that many more articles that are nominated for deletion are indeed deleted, as opposed to being saved or otherwise kept. A user might spend 5 minutes trying to find the perfect picture for an article that’s going to be deleted…and that’s 5 minutes they could be spending adding a picture to a featured article candidate, or something else like that.

That’s…true… Would they still be able to add images the manual way from the article?

Invest in Saving an NFD with a useable title, see the http://www.wikihow.com/wikiHow:NFD-Saviors . {{Nfd Savior Invite}} which says: ‘‘We need more doctors at the Article Hospital. You’re invited to the NFD Savior Project. Please join us!’’ (wikiHow:NFD-Saviors)

After patrolling through a few more images added to articles tagged with copyvios and copyviobot templates, I’d like to revive this issue if I may. With the major changes to NFDs through the NFD Guardian tool, I don’t think adding pictures to NFDs is as much of an issue in my mind anymore. Therefore, I still support the templates to exclude that @Krystle mentioned earlier:

While not as much of an issue, I would say that it would probably be worthwhile to create the same exclusions for the video picker app as well, if they do not already exist.

…I don’t suppose the same could be placed in other apps, suck as QG and categorization?

I’ve put this on the engineering queue, but some of the wikiHaus staff is on vacation right now, so this might not get addressed until later in the month. Feel free to bump this thread or ping me about it later. Not sure about making this change for video picker, QG, categorization - if you observe that it actually happens a lot, like Maniac observed with the image picker app, then let me know. Otherwise it’s probably not worth fixing a problem that rarely happens:slight_smile:
