Okay, so I had to edit some of the images on an article I’m working on for accuracy reasons, and create some new ones. I don’t mean swapping out images btw, I mean I had to open up an image editor. What I’m not sure about though is which license to apply to the edited versions.
What’s the license of the original images? Whether they’re Creative Commons, Fair Use, or All Rights Reserved (i.e., {{WikiVisual}}) could affect whether you’re able to edit and relicense them.
It says they’re Creative Commons. The article is here: https://www.wikihow.com/index.php?title=Learn-Type-Weaknesses-in-Pokémon&diff=29813309&oldid=28229781
The images in question are all the ones under part 3, as well as the first two under part 4.
I’ll be 100% honest in that image licensing is not my domain, so I’m not completely
positive on this – but it looks like those images are licensed under CC-BY-NC-SA (attribution, noncommercial, ShareAlike), which means that in theory, they should be safe to reupload under Creative Commons. Since you’ve edited them, you’d need to credit the original uploader of the image. I typically do that in the image summary. For instance: Original image by [User:Username|Username]; edited and uploaded in compliance with CC-BY-NC-SA 3.0
That being said, I did notice we don’t seem to have a generic {{Cc by nc sa 3.0}} license (just the “self” one), so I’ll ping @Eric
since he knows more about image licensing than I do!
Either way, since the original licensing here is Creative Commons and they’re not being used for a commercial purpose, I assume you’d be fine to upload them under Creative Commons and attribute it back to Wikivisual. We can always correct image licenses after the fact, or delete the images, worst-case scenario.

Thanks for the tip! Like I said, some of the images were a bit inaccurate, and while I was fixing them, I’d also used them to generate new images for the other half of the article.
I’ll go ahead with your advice for now, er- in the monring (my battery is @ 1% and I’m going to bed now), and if anything, we can always fix the image licensing later if need be.

@Yol_Verinrii
, I agree with @anon74718567
’s recommendation. Keep in mind that sometimes it can be tricky to edit existing Wikivisual images and keep them in true “wiki style,” so if it’s easier to do so you can always simply request that Wikivisual update the images to fix whatever issues there are.
