Over the last week, we’ve launched a feature for recipe articles that have more than one variation of a recipe. This feature automatically links the title of the ingredients list to the method it corresponds to. Our goal is to make it quick and easy for wikiHow readers to navigate to the correct steps once they’ve gathered their ingredients.

The feature links the title and method by looking for a method that contains the entire title of ingredients list. It doesn’t require that the ingredients list title contain the whole method name. This allows us to link the ingredients list called “Chocolate Chip Cookies” to the method called “Baking Chocolate Chip Cookies.”

There are some instances where automatic matching wasn’t possible, so we’d love your help to fix these. This may involve some thoughtful renaming of either the ingredient list titles or cooking methods. For example in the recipe for Baked Corn , the ingredients list for “Baked Corn Casserole” isn’t being matched to “Baking Corn Casserole.” In this case, you may decide to rename the ingredients list to “Corn Casserole,” which will create a match. You can tell if something isn’t matched, because the title in the ingredient list is black instead of green (and of course, doesn’t have a link!)

We have a few different batches of known articles where there isn’t a match. If you feel so inclined, we’d love for you to help out. You can find the first batch HERE . Just put your name next to one or more that you’re working on, and then update it when you have completed it. I’ve completed the first one as an example, using “List match” as the edit summary.

Here’s a quick cheat sheet for matching ingredients and methods:

Ingredient title = “Chocolate Chip Cookies”

Method = “Baking Chocolate Chip Cookies"

✓ this one contains all words from the ingredient title.

Ingredient title = “Chocolate Chip Cookies”

Method = “Chocolate Chip Cookies”

✓ these are exactly the same (even though it doesn’t start with a gerund!)

Ingredient title = “Cookies Chocolate Chip”

Method = “Making Chocolate Chip Cookies”

✘ this one has the words in a different order, so it won’t link.

Ingredient title = “Baking Chocolate Chip Cookies"

Method = “Chocolate Chip Cookies”

✘ this one doesn’t have all of the words from the ingredient title in the method title, so it won’t link.

Are you up for the challenge? :)

This sounds cool!  Let me take a closer look:smiley:

I’ve noticed it in my recipe article I started :). Great feature!

Happy to help!!! I’ll try a few:slight_smile:

I put my name for 2 and did 1. So, now do I say it’s completed? What do the fractions mean here? Sections or something?

@FlowerPower555 I put the month/date 3/17 - American style! You can add a checkmark or the date or whatever you’d like to show it’s done :)

Ok, thanks :).

I must say that it’s really fun (and addicting) fixing these!!!

Yep :).

There’s like… 3-4 people at once here. Fun!

That’s called progress. Awesome innovation wikiHow!:slight_smile:

I have a question- some new users have been rolling back my changes. In the event that I don’t find the rollbacks and the rollback that reverted my changes gets patrolled, what will happen? Because I already marked it as complete on the spreadsheet, will it go unnoticed?

@FlowerPower555 , we can keep an eye on patrolling and changes - hopefully as more patrollers become aware of the project it won’t be an issue.

After the lists are complete, we will do another pull to find any articles that may have been missed or rolled back. So either way, we’ll catch 'em! :)

This sounds interesting:slight_smile:I’ll give it a shot.

On my computer glaze is matched but cake isn’t…

@CPenguin17 you’ve found out about the minimum character length requirement! (which I just learned about too haha.) This feature will only match 5+ characters, so we don’t mismatch on small words. You could potentially try “The Cake” instead?

Thanks for telling us, I was running into problems too.

Sometimes an article shows up in the list even though all of its ingredient headers contain a link to their respective methods. These articles all have in common that the ingredient header contains a reference.

Just a quick question, what do we do with an article that only has one recipe/ingredients list???

@Zodi ah, interesting. They must be coming up in the data pull accidentally. I’ll see if we can remove those in the next pull.

@FutureHerpetologist - there’s nothing to do with those ones - could you please put a note saying “single recipe”? I’ll also see if we can remove them from the next batch. Thanks!
