Cite an Essay in MLA Format
In-text citation:
Include the author's last name and the page number(s) from which the information was taken. Place this information in parentheses at the end of the sentence or within the sentence itself, before any punctuation marks. If the author's name is mentioned in the sentence, only include the page number(s) in parentheses.
Example 1:
According to Doe, "the art of essay writing is a skill that can be developed" (45).
Example 2:
In her essay, Doe argues that "feminism plays a vital role in contemporary society" (Jane Doe 27).
Works Cited entry:
For the Works Cited entry, include the following information in the given order:
Author's Last Name, First Name.
"Title of Essay."
Title of Book or Anthology, edited by Editor's Name(s).
Edition (if applicable).
Publisher, Year.
Page range of the essay.
If the essay was accessed online, include the URL and the date of access.
Example 1:
Doe, John. "The Art of Essay Writing." Essays on Literature, edited by Jane Smith, 2nd ed., Oxford University Press, 2022, pp. 45-60.
Example 2:
Doe, Jane. "Feminism in Contemporary Society." Online Essays, edited by John Smith, 2020, www.example.com/onlineessays/feminism. Accessed 12 May 2023.
Example 3:
Doe, John. "The Impact of Climate Change on Biodiversity." Environmental Studies Journal, vol. 7, no. 2, 2019, pp. 45-60. www.examplejournal.com/article/environmental-studies/12345. Accessed 12 May 2023.
Remember to italicize the title of the book or anthology and use quotation marks for the title of the essay in the Works Cited entry.
