No. Staining over dirt, dust, and grime is a bad idea because the stain won't stick to the wood properly. Always clean off the wood before you stain.

You can pretty much use any wood stain—they're available in water-based and oil-based. Water-based stains are more common, but oil-based stains will perform better and last a little longer.
  • Question
What color and brand matches teak wood?
    Community Answer
Mix and match colors such as cream and tan, but for accent colors, you want to take a cue from the undertones on the stain your teak has. In many cases, teak has orange undertones, and if you want to bring out this color, you should look for the opposite color on the color wheel chart (in this case, it is blue).

    Saachi Singh

Using 120G sandpaper against the grain helps to freshen up the top layer and removes impurities from the top of the wood.

It's not a bad thing, it's what you want. Just make sure to use a primer that keeps sap from leaking through.

You don't have to worry about sanding off the layer of gray wood that discolors old teak that has been outdoors, but you do need to wash the wood thoroughly to remove dirt.

Sure, you just clean it with some solvent or alcohol. Use sandpaper after that. Then you can start to stain all that table and give it teak oil.
  • Question
Thirteen years ago, I stained (brown) a new, high-quality teak set. Did not seal. Kept on the screen porch and is still in fantastic condition. Can I lightly sand and re-stain on top of the brown?
    Wikinow1234
    Community Answer
Yes, of course. It would be recommended to seal it, but you don't have to. Try to use other seals instead of wax.
  • Question
Can I refinish my orange-ish teak to a darker brown teak?
    Community Answer
Paint over the existing finish with another coat of stain. The first thing you should do is wipe off the old finish with a clean cloth. Now allow the surface to dry. Mix up some new stain and brush it onto the wood in the same way as you did before. Now you are good to go.
