All About BDSM & Kink

What is BDSM?
BDSM stands for “bondage, discipline, sadism, masochism.” It’s a sexual practice that includes power dynamics, pain, and other activities that are sometimes viewed as taboo.

What is kink?
A kink is a sexual interest that falls outside what most people consider typical.

Is BDSM problematic?
Not necessarily! As with any sexual practice, as long as everyone involved consents, enjoys themselves, and is respectful and mindful of their partners, there’s nothing problematic about it.

How do you participate in BDSM safely?

  • Establish your boundaries before you begin, so you and your partner know what’s on the table and what’s off limits.
  • Make a safe word you can say if you get uncomfortable, so you can stop whenever you feel like it.
  • Get to know your partner outside the bedroom. A friendly, trusting, and familiar relationship is key to good BDSM.
  • Keep it in the bedroom. BDSM often involves uneven power dynamics, which is fun, but not so much when those dynamics start bleeding into your personal life. What happens in bed stays in bed.

How can you have safer sex?

  • Get yourself tested for STDs, and know your partners’ statuses, too.
  • Use protection like condoms, PrEP, and birth control to prevent STDs and unexpected pregnancies.
  • Communicate clearly and often with your partner to make sure you’re both having fun.
  • Always get consent.
  • Use the restroom and wash up afterward to stay clean and healthy.
