The following is a walkthrough of the glitch in Pokémon Yellow version that allows you to catch Mew without using Action Replay, GameShark, or other third-party devices. If done properly, following this procedure will result in an encounter with a level 7 Mew on Nugget Bridge.
Catching Mew in Pokémon Yellow
To catch Mew in Pokémon Yellow, approach the trainer in the grass by Nugget Bridge while pressing START, then use Abra's Teleport. Fight the Route 25 Youngster with a Slowpoke. Teleport after winning and return to Nugget Bridge. When the START menu shows up, press B and you'll enter battle with a wild Mew.
Steps
Catching Mew With the Mew Glitch
-
Defeat your rival on Nugget Bridge. His first Pokémon will be a level 18 Spearow, so it's a good idea to have a Rock- or Electric-type Pokémon as the first in your party. After winning the battle, you must clear all of the trainers on Nugget Bridge, including the final man who offers you a position in Team Rocket.
-
Avoid battling the trainer to the left of the bridge. He will be a key part of the glitch later. Make sure to save your game at this point, just in case something with the glitch goes awry.Advertisement
-
Fight other trainers in this area until you find a trainer with a level 17 Slowpoke. This trainer (the Route 25 Youngster) will be standing between some trees, alone. Once you find this trainer, turn off your game and start from your last save point.
- If you already know where to find the trainer with the level 17 Slowpoke, you can skip this step.
-
Find and capture an Abra. Try looking in the grass around the Daycare. This Pokémon is a little difficult to catch, as it teleports away from battle as soon as it can. The only way to catch it is to throw a Pokéball and hope for the best.
- If you have a Pokémon that can inflict Sleep, you can put the Abra to sleep before trying to catch it for a better chance at getting it.
-
Return to Nugget Bridge. Walk up Nugget Bridge and save when you reach the end. Now is the time to approach the trainer who is hiding in the grass, who you have not battled before.
-
Approach the trainer in the grass slowly. Walk in front of where he is, far enough away so that he cannot see you, but will see you if you take one more step towards him. Save your game right here, because this next step can be tricky.
-
Hit the down arrow and the start button at the same time. You will take a step down toward the trainer, but the start menu will appear instead of the exclamation point above his head.
- At this point, go into your Pokémon menu and use Abra's Teleport ability.
-
Return to Route 25. Fight the Youngster with the level 17 Slowpoke, being sure to have him walk at least one step towards you to battle or the game will freeze.
- Once you win the battle, teleport back to the Pokémon Center.
-
Return to Nugget Bridge. Then, walk back up Nugget Bridge and your start menu will appear.
-
Click the B button and a wild Mew will appear at level 7. Make sure you have a lot of Pokéballs on hand. If you saved your Master Ball, this is a great time to use it! [1] X Research source

- This glitch can be used to get other Pokemon besides Mew! For example, follow the method for the glitch, but fight a Pidgey. Instead of a Mew, a Nidoking will appear. However, getting the Nidoking can make items disappear.
- If you already defeated the Slowpoke there’s still a chance to get Mew, but only if you haven't beaten the Cerulean City Gym. Just follow the steps but instead of beating the Slowpoke, beat the first trainer in the gym.
- You don't need an Abra specifically, any Pokemon that knows teleport will do!
- To get a level 100 Mew, use growl on the Slowpoke 6-7 times.
Warnings
- Like any glitch, using these methods may corrupt your save file. Thanks
