Do you need to update your email password on your iPhone? If you recently changed your email password on another device, you'll need to update your iPhone's settings so your email can continue to sync to the Mail app. Since the release of iOS 18, you'll probably need to completely remove and re-add the email account to update the password. Fortunately, this only takes a few seconds and won't cause you any headaches. We’ll also explain how to update your Apple Account password or change your password in a third-party email app.
Changing an Email Password in iOS 18+
You can no longer enter a new password for an existing email account in iPhone Mail app. If you need to update your password, you will need to go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts , delete the account, and re-add it using the new password.
Steps
Updating Your Email Password on iOS 18 and Later
-
1Open the Settings app. Use this method if you’re using an email client other than iCloud and you’ve already changed your password on your email provider’s website (e.g., Gmail or Microsoft.com). Once you’ve done that, go to Settings on your iPhone.
- If you haven't updated to iOS 18, you can still change your email password without deleting and reading your account. Jump down to the legacy method to learn how.
-
2Scroll down and tap Apps . It’s at the bottom of the main Settings menu.Advertisement
-
3Tap Mail . It’s in the M section of the Apps menu.
-
4Tap Mail Accounts . It’s at the top of the menu.
-
5Select the account you want to update. You should see all the email accounts you have linked to the Mail app on this screen, under the ACCOUNTS header. Tap the one with the password you want to update.
-
6Tap Delete Account . It’s at the bottom of the menu. Tap Delete from My iPhone to confirm.
- Don’t worry, this won’t actually delete your email account–it will just unlink it from the Mail app.
-
7Return to the Accounts menu and tap Add Account . You should automatically return to the Accounts menu after deleting your account, but if not, you can get there again by going to Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts . Once there, tap Add Account at the bottom of your list of accounts.
-
8Select your email provider. For example, if you’re updating an Outlook account, select Outlook.com from the list of options. Tap Other if you don’t see your provider.
-
9Follow the prompts to sign into your account again. You’ll be prompted to sign in with the username and password associated with your email account, then select your preferred sync settings. When you’re done, tap Save in the top right corner. Make sure to enter the new password for your email account.
- That’s it–you’re good to go! Open the Mail app and navigate to the Mailboxes screen, then select the account you just updated to see your mail.
Updating Your Email Password on iOS 17 and Earlier
-
Open the Settingsapp. If you use the Mail app on your iPhone to send and receive email and have recently changed your email password on your provider's website, use this method to update your password.
- If you haven't yet changed the password through your email provider (e.g., Gmail , Yahoo, or your work email server ), log into your provider's website in Safari or another mobile browser and change it there first.
- You may see Account Error in the Mail app if you need to update your password.
-
Tap Mail . This is next to the white envelope icon.
- If you're using iOS 18 or later, scroll down to the bottom and tap Apps first.
-
Tap Accounts or Mail Accounts . You'll see one of these two options near the top of the page.
-
Tap the email you want to update. You'll see a list of all added email accounts. [1] X Research source

Tap Re-enter Password (if present). If this option is available, it will be at the top in blue. A new page will open with the official sign-in page for your email provider. Sign in with your new password to finish updating your new email password.
- If you see a password field instead, tap it, then update your password there.
- If neither option is available, you will need to remove your email account and re-add it to update the password. This only takes a few seconds.
-
Delete and re-add the account if needed. If there was no option to re-enter your password, tap Delete account , then Delete account again to confirm. You can then re-add the account with the updated password by tapping Add Account and following the on-screen instructions.
- Once your account has been read, your email will be updated and begin to sync.
Changing Your iCloud Email Password
-

-
3Tap Sign-In & Security . It’s near the top of the menu.
-
4Select Change Password . It’s about halfway down the screen, under the SECURITY header.
-
5Enter your iPhone passcode. This is the same passcode you use to unlock your phone.
-
6Type and retype your new password. On the next screen, enter the new password you want to use twice. Tap Continue when you’re done. Follow the prompts to confirm the change.
- At this point, you may be asked if you want to sign out of your other devices that are logged in with the same Apple Account. This is totally optional, but it’s a good idea to do so if you’re worried that someone else has access to one of those devices.
- Your iCloud/Apple Account password should now be automatically updated in Mail!
