How to Create a Stellar Team Name

Define your main goals for the alter ego. First thing first: why do you want or need an alter ego in the first place? What are you trying to achieve? Do you have goals for this alter ego? How will working or acting under an alter ego be different?

Asking yourself these questions can help you figure out your motivations for creating an alter ego—and, more than that, what you want from your alter ego.

Define your current persona.
How would you describe your real self? What are your core characteristics—and which ones should carry over into the alter ego? Conversely, which characteristics would you want to try and change for your alter ego? Honesty is key! Think deeply about these questions and be truthful with yourself. It might help to make a list of every trait, habit, and quirk you associate with yourself so you can more easily define your persona (and the persona you want in an alter ego).

Choose characteristics for your alter ego.
The next list you’ll need is a brainstormed list of characteristics that you want your alter ego to have. This should include habits, emotional traits, style, and other nuances. It might help to categorize the different characteristics so you can better keep track of them!

Create your alter ego’s profile and backstory. This is what can make your alter ego feel fully realized! Ultimately, an alter ego is a character you’re embodying—so what’s that character’s story? Think about the following for your alter ego:

  • What’s your alter ego’s backstory?
  • What are your alter ego’s motivations? Why do they do the things they do?
  • What are your alter ego’s core values and personality traits?
  • What’s your alter ego’s personal style like? This includes fashion sense and lifestyle!
  • What are your alter ego’s hobbies and interests?
  • What are your alter ego’s goals in life?

Put yourself in your alter ego’s shoes. In other words, ask yourself what they’d do in different situations. This can help you get into a different mindset and do things that your alter ego would do, even if they make the real you a little nervous. It can help to make physical changes, too—wear things your alter ego would wear and style your hair like your alter ego would. In time, you’ll be able to comfortably take on the mantle of your alter ego!

Just remember that you need to be able to detach from your alter ego, too. Remember: an alter ego isn’t supposed to replace the old you—it’s just another aspect of you, something you can turn on when you need it and turn off when you don’t.

An alter ego is something most people use in public. When it’s just you (and your friends, family, and other people you’re close to)? That’s all you.
