Reds
* Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet sauvignon is a type of wine that is aged in French and American oaks for 15-20 years. It’s extremely popular and grows in a variety of climates. Cabs are full bodied with heavy tannins and a flavor profile made up of dark fruit flavors and soft herbal notes.
* Merlot. Merlot is another popular red wine that is known for blending with other reds, as well as being a standalone wine. Merlots are medium to heavy bodied with very soft, mild flavors and mild tannins.
* Pinot Noir. Typically pinot noirs are on the expensive side because the grapes can be tricky to grow. They produce a dry red wine that is light to medium bodied and has crisp berry flavors alongside some deeper, warmer notes.
* Syrah. Also known as shiraz in Australia and South Africa, this wine is deep purple in color and full to medium bodied with strong tannins and deep flavors such as boysenberry and blackberry.
* Zinfandel. Zinfandels are medium to full bodied reds (not to be confused with white zinfandel!) and contain bold flavors that hint of a broad range of fruits, as well as spicy notes.
Whites
* Chardonnay. The most popular white wine, it’s medium bodied with medium to high acidity and contains smooth fruit and oak flavors.
* Chenin Blanc. Grown all over the world, chenin blancs are not as popular as they once were, but still make up a highly appealing white that can be either sweet or dry. Light bodied with medium to high acidity, chenin blancs have strong floral as well as fruity flavors.
* Pinot Grigio. Light and crisp, pinot grigio originated in Italy. Wines that more closely resemble the Italian variety are labeled grigio, while wines that resemble the French version are known as pinot gris. Pinot grigio is typically dry with high acidity and contains notes of apple, pear, and citrus.
* Riesling. A very versatile white, riesling can be either sweet or dry, though many people think of riesling as just a sweet wine. They have strong floral and fruit flavors and pair well with many different foods, including desserts.
* Sauvignon Blanc. A light to medium bodied dry white wine, sauvignon blancs are high in acidity and have a bold, crisp flavor. It’s an easy starter wine for someone who doesn’t have much experience with wine.
Other
* Champagne or sparkling wine. Sparkling wine is any wine that undergoes a second fermentation to make it bubbly. Champagne is a sparkling wine from the Champagne region of France.
* Rosé. This type of wine is made from red grapes using a limited maceration method that leaves you with the beautiful pink color. Typically rosés are dry and fruity.
