I want to celebrate Koinobori with my family and kids this year, and I want tips on fun things for us to do! I know that it's traditional to fly Koinobori outside our house, but haven't made them before and would love tips on making them, anything else we can do to have a great celebration?

If you'd like to make decorative origami koinobori to celebrate Children’s Day, you'll need square origami paper. One method we recommend for displaying your koinobori is to attach the finished origami fish onto a thin wooden rod. This way, you can display them easily either indoors or outdoors, whether it's in a decorative vase, poked into a front lawn so that they're freestanding, or hung from a porch. You can affix the folded carp to the rod once they’re finished folding them using a delicate tape like masking tape. You’ll also want to remember to draw or paste black pupils onto your finished fish!

If you're making Koinobori from paper, you can fold it in half when cutting it to make the halves symmetrical.

When hanging up your Koinobori, the different colors represent different members of the family. Black for the father, red for the mother, blue for the eldest child, and any other colors for the rest of the children. They are typically hung in order of size as well, with the longest one on top. Above all the Koinobori, there is typically colorful streamers with the family crest. To get. your kids involved, have them create and hang up their own Koinobori.

Some traditional foods for Kodomo no hi (Children's Day) are chimaki and kashiwamochi. Have fun celebrating with your family!

You can teach your childen the significance of Children's Day and Koinobori! I'm sure they'll appreciate a good story. On Children's Day, families celebrate the healthy growth and happiness of their children.
