To keep your nails healthy after removing nail polish, I think the most important thing is cuticle oil. It's very important to nourish the nail because you keep washing your hands throughout the day so you keep washing out all the natural oils. The nail needs those oils so that it's a little bit bendy.

I would also recommend always keeping a base coat on your nail. It's not a solid layer on the nail, but it's still protected from absorbing water which is what is washing out those oils.

Shellac is another name for regular gel polish. You can remove gel nails at home by soaking cotton balls in acetone and wrapping them around each nail with tinfoil. Just make sure you’re using 100% acetone, because sometimes people get nail polish remover and 100% acetone confused. Nail polish remover won't soak off the gel, it’s meant for basic nail polish. I just wanted to be sure to note that because I’ve had my clients get confused before when they’ve tried to do the soak off themselves.

Shellac is just another name for gel manicure. Start by filing off the top layer, wrapping it with a cotton ball with acetone and aluminum foil, waiting about 15 minutes . Then take it off, and see how much you can gently push off with your cuticle pusher. If it comes off, that’s great, but if you still have some that's stuck on, rewrap it again and continue the process until it all comes off.

It's easy to remove shellac polish from your fingernails at home using an acetone polish remover:
  1. Buff the surface of your nails with a nail file.
  2. Wrap cotton pads soaked with acetone around each nail.
  3. Let the acetone soften the shellac nail polish for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Scrape the shellac polish off with a cuticle pusher.
  5. Soak your nails with acetone for another 5 minutes for stubborn polish.
