Usually there will be an alert saying that you have a low battery when your battery gets to 10 percent. If this doesn't happen, you have probably turned off the setting that tells you that. To turn it on, go to the Settings app and then go to Battery. There should be a setting that tells you how to switch on Low Battery alerts in there.
