Did you find the vertex when graphing it? If so, the axis of symmetry is the vertical line running through the vertex. To check your answer, it should have the equation x = 1/2.

(The x-coordinate of the vertex is found by the expression -b / 2a, which in this case is -(-4)/(2)(-1), which equals 4 / -2, or -2. The y-coordinate of the vertex is found by substituting the x-coordinate into the original equation. Thus, the y-coordinate is -(-2)² - 4(-2) = -4 + 8 = 4.) So the vertex is (-2,4). Because the parabola open down, the axis is a vertical line passing through the vertex with the x-coordinate -2. So the axis is x= -2.
