QuestionI planted a wisteria as a twig in compost and in a greenhouse. How long will it take to show any sign of leaves or growth?Community AnswerIt should grow roots in 4 to 6 weeks but if you are concerned about the young plant in the coming winter, wait to plant in the ground until spring, keeping it indoors until then. For now, water when the soil is dry to the touch. Once planted, top with a few inches of mulch 1x each year to help maintain moisture through out its life.

QuestionMy wisteria has vines that grow every which way on the ground and attach to the ground. The vines trip you if your foot gets caught in them. It's going crazy, what should I do to it without killing it?CageyCatTop AnswererWithout knowing your porch/yard area situation, it is important to understand that vines need supports. You "train" vines for which way to grow through supports. Vines use twining stems, tendrils, aerial roots or adhesive disks sometimes called "hold fasts" that attach to supports. It sounds like you have tendrils, which are very strong, often lighter in color, and are curled from the vine around anything it can attach to. Cut the tendrils or unwrap them from grass/weeds. Then, put lightweight twine rising upward from a railing or trellis. Use bread ties or lightweight wire to loosely hold your vine to to the trellis or twine, about 6 to 12 inches apart. Don't attach vines to rain gutters - it can pull the gutter down.
