Etsy has some nice beads at better prices but doesn't disclose much about treatments. eBay is the best place to get decent beads at an awesome price if you don't mind bidding and waiting sometimes up to a month for your package from Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Malaysia, etc. Of course, eBay sellers don't normally disclose treatments made to their beads, BUT you can get a 15&1/2" string of 6-8mm gemstone beads for about a buck (free shipping too!) by mindful bidding.

Plastic or glass would be a good choice. They are available at most craft stores, or even box stores with craft sections. Additionally, they are not too pricey.

It depends on the beads. The smaller the beads, the smaller the string. The bigger the beads, then it is up to you.
