  • Question
Can I put a clear coat over the gourd, leaving it in a natural state with no paint?
    Community Answer
Absolutely, but if the gourd is going to be outside, spray it with a marine varnish. You can find these at Menard's or Home Depot.
  • Question
What do you do if you make a mistake?
    Ollieoxenfree
    Community Answer
    Paint over it.
  • Question
Does the gourd have to be dried before painting it?
    Fae Lynne
    Community Answer
Yes. If it's not, the layer of paint will make it hard for moisture to escape as it dries, leading to a rotten gourd.
  • Question
Where do I get the red paint for the gourds?
    Community Answer
Use any outdoor acrylic. Find them at Michael's, Jo-Ann, Walmart or any hobby store. To find the red you like, buy several 2-oz. bottles and mix up the perfect color.
  • Question
Can I dry a gourd after it is painted?
    Community Answer
No, you cannot. Gourds must cure first, which could take up to five months or so. Gourds mold during the curing process and must be cleaned with bleach, soap and water, which would clear off or damage your paint.
  • Question
Can I use a black permanent marker to complete some of the details on my gourd?
    Community Answer
If you are hanging your gourd outside, even the permanent marker will fade. Try using the marker, then painting over the areas with outdoor acrylic paint.
