What’s In It For You?
Short Story
“ Look! ” shouted Alisha. “ There’s a note in a bottle! I’m going to go and open it! ”
Selene rushed over to Alisha, who was on her knees trying to unscrew the cork.
“ What do you think is inside? ” asked Selene, her eyes shining.
“ I dunno, ” replied Alisha. “ But I bet it’s something good. ”
Finally, Alisha managed to uncork the bottle and shook the bottle eagerly.
The note fell out, and Alisha snatched from the ground and began reading.
Suddenly, she began laughing with joy.
“ We’re going on an adventure Lenny, with pirates ! Real pirates! ”
Selene slightly slumped with disappointment.
In reality, she wasn’t hoping for another big adventure all over again, but Alisha was so excited she couldn’t bear to dampen her mood.
Instead, in a tiredly excited attitude, she took the note and read it to herself.
Suddenly, she felt pike of excitement for what she read, and a flame of irritation at her friend. “ Alisha, ” she said in a cold and crisp voice.“ Why did you lie? You’re making things up about pirates. This says we’re going to discover gems at our house! You always lie! ”
Alisha, shocked at being accused of lying, got angry too at Selene.
“ What do you mean, lying? I would never! It said if we came here at exactly quarter-past three, we would be whisked away on another journey! You’re lying - finding gems in your house? What a vain lie! ”
The girls bickered until Dolly, Alisha’s younger sister, came up to them.
“ What are you holding, Selene? ”
Alisha glared at Selene, then snatched the letter and gave it to Dolly.
“ Here Dolly, you read the letter and tell us what’s written there! ” Dolly faltered a bit, but then started reading it aloud. “ You will win the flower-arranging contest next year, and will learn to knit like Mama! ”
“ Now you’re lying! ” shouted Alisha at the unassuming Dolly. “ What’s up with you and Selene today! ”
“ It said that, ” pouted Dolly, angrily. “ And if you don’t believe it, you’re the silly one! ”
Selene, who had calmed down during the sisterly argument, came to a realisation.
“ The letter shows us what we want each! I bet that’s it! If my brother Rory saw this, he’d see a letter telling him he will graduate from school with the top marks, because he is a perfectionist! We’re all seeing different letters because we want to! The happiest man on earth could look at this letter, and see nothing because he’d want nothing else! ”
Alisha and Dolly paused, only understanding the words now.
“ Boy, who would’ve believed it? Selene, you’re wizard! But, this letter is dangerous. You saw us three, bickering. We need to cast it to sea! ”
“ But others would have to read it if they found it! ” piped up Dolly.
Finally, they decided to bury it underground, and never whisper a mention about it again.
Twenty-two years later… Two young boys were playing on a sandy beach, when one tripped over something. “ Oww! ” he yelled as he fell. “ That was hard! Like glass! ” The second one ran over to where he fell, to see a glass bottle, with a letter lying inside. “ Holy moly, Jack! You found a note in a bottle! ” Eagerly, Ronald unscrewed the letter, and his face lit up as he began reading…

Simba is my first pet ever. We have been together since 2014! He is very old, with some problems with his eyesight and skin. He is very calm and patient - he has never bitten me (other than the time when we were playing). He is a Shetland Sheepdog, and was born on the 29th of July, 2014. He is the best-behaved dog I have ever known, and the guardian of my family.
Since Simba is so well behaved, the only funny photo of him is this baby one, taken in 2014.

Sushi is my lovely cat! I got him in 2022; we’ve together for now two years! He is a British Shorthair, and was born on the 2nd of July, 2021. We have had a hardship in February 2024 though; he opened the door by himself (I know, how is that possible?!) and left the house! I was basically depressed, when suddenly, 35 days later, someone has shot my mom a text that she has found him! Surprisingly, he gets along with Simba, and they are basically brothers.
Managed to catch this right in time!
