Striking up a conversation:
Ask her a casual question.
“Hey, could I borrow a pencil? Mine just broke.”
“Did you get the math homework today? I can’t remember it.”
Comment on something around you.
“This line is crazy. I don’t think I can wait this long for such terrible food, haha.”
“There’s no one in class today. This is so weird.”
If you know her a bit, talk about something you know she likes.
“Hey Marisa, I heard the volleyball game went really well yesterday. Congrats!”
“How’s all the student council dance planning going? Don’t tell me it’s gonna be as lame as the last one… just kidding, haha.”
Continuing the conversation:
Ask her interesting questions about herself.
“Didn’t you live in France for a year? I heard that from someone. That’s crazy. What was that like?”
“You always do so well on the history tests. Is that your favorite subject?”
Make light jokes.
“OK, that looks amazing. Can I beg you to make my lunches from now on?”
“Wait, you knitted that yourself? I really thought my grandma was the only person in the world who still knitted. I bet you guys would get along great.”
Move on to a light, easy topic if there’s a lull.
“So how was your weekend?”
“I can’t believe midterms are coming up. I’m not ready at all, haha. How are you feeling?”
Tip: Really listen when she’s talking to you. Make eye contact, nod, and make comments about the things she says to show her that you’re interested.
