Alison Betts is a trivia expert and Jeopardy! contestant based in Los Angeles, CA. As a lifelong fan of Jeopardy!, Alison was the first player in Season 40 to become a 5-game champion and secure a spot in the Tournament of Champions. She also appeared on two other game shows, Bullsh*t The Game Show in 2022 and 25 or Words or Less in 2019, on which she won $250,000 and $10,000 respectively. Alison has a degree in Film and Media Studies from Arizona State University and works as a writer and creative executive. She has written pilot scripts, consulted on numerous television series, and served as the head speechwriter and communications director for a U.S. Senate Campaign.

What are the best types of trivia questions?

To me, a really good trivia question is something that you can puzzle out, and if you don't get the right answer, you feel good about having learned it. I get really annoyed when I hear a trivia question, and when I find out the answer, I don't care. So my goal when I write trivia is to write trivia that you either can get to by puzzling out or enjoy learning.

For example, the largest boat evacuation in US history was 500,000 people. What event was this for? It was during 9/11 out of Manhattan. That's a great fun fact and excellent piece of trivia.

What’s the easiest way to start playing trivia?

There are lots of different types of trivia, from Trivial Pursuit at home with your friends, to formal trivia at a local pub. Jeopardy now has a Jeopardy Bar League rolling out where they're hosting Jeopardy games across the country!

There are also online trivia leagues, like Learned League — which is referral only — to Quip, a chill league that you can play over Zoom.

No matter what your interest level is in trivia, there's a game and a place for you, whether it's social with friends, social with strangers, or just by yourself.
