An easy guide to linking Facebook Marketplace to PayPal
PDF download Download Article

Linking your PayPal account to Meta Pay (formerly Facebook Pay) lets you use PayPal to buy and sell shippable items on Facebook Marketplace. As a buyer, you can click the Buy now button on any qualifying item to pay with your linked PayPal account. As a seller, you can get paid for Marketplace sales through PayPal instead of your bank account. Whether you're buying or selling items on Facebook Marketplace, this wikiHow guide will teach you how to pay or get paid through PayPal.

Using PayPal on Facebook Marketplace

  • To link your PayPal account, go to your Marketplace profile > Meta Pay > Other payment methods > Add payment method and select PayPal.
  • You can use PayPal to pay for any Facebook Marketplace item that has a "Buy Now" button.
  • If you're a seller, you can accept PayPal as a payment method if you plan to ship the item.

  1. All you'll need to do is link your PayPal account to Meta Pay, which is easy to do in the Facebook mobile app and on the website. However, not all sales qualify for payment with PayPal. There are two ways to buy and sell on Facebook Marketplace:
    • Selling with Shipping: If you plan to ship an item you're selling, you can receive your payment via PayPal or your bank account. If you're buying an item that can be shipped (you'll see a Buy Now button if the item qualifies), you can pay with PayPal. [1]
      • To pay for an item with PayPal, the buyer will click Buy Now on a listing, then use their PayPal account to make the purchase.
      • Four days after delivery confirmation, the seller's money will be available in PayPal. [2]
      • Purchases made through the Buy Now link are covered by Facebook's Purchase Protection program. [3]
    • Local transactions: There is no "Buy now" option available for local transactions, so you cannot be paid or send payment for these transactions with PayPal through Facebook.
      • You can accept PayPal for in-person transactions, but you'll need to arrange that outside of Facebook Marketplace, and the transaction will not be protected by Facebook's Purchase Protection program.
  2. 2
If you're a seller, you still have to link a bank account to Marketplace. You can opt to get paid via PayPal, but you must still provide your bank account information to Facebook to sell items on Marketplace for shipping. [4]

  1. If a seller lists an item that can be shipped, you can easily purchase that item using the PayPal account that's linked to Meta Pay.
    • You won't be able to pay with Meta Pay if purchasing something through a local transaction. You can discuss payment arrangements with the seller while messaging about the item, and they may accept PayPal off of Facebook or through Messenger .
  2. Once you run a search or choose a category, you'll have some options for filtering the items you see.
  3. If you're using a computer, click the Delivery method menu on the left and select Shipping . In the Facebook mobile app, tap the dropdown menu that says Local at the top, select Shipped , and then tap See items . Now you will only see items you can buy with your PayPal account.
  4. As long as the item can be shipped, you'll see a blue "Buy Now" button at the top of the listing.
  5. It's the blue button near the top of the screen. A Meta Pay window will appear.
  6. 6
Enter your shipping details and select PayPal as your payment method. If a different payment method is selected, click or tap the menu and select your PayPal account.
  7. This tells Facebook Pay to pay with your PayPal account rather than other accounts you've listed.
  8. 8
Click or tap Pay now to complete the purchase. Once you place the order, the seller has 3 days to ship your item. The money will be removed from your PayPal account once the seller marks the item as shipped, which requires them to enter a tracking number. [6] The seller will not receive your money until 4 to 5 days after you receive the item.

  1. 1
Is it safe to use PayPal on Facebook Marketplace? It's safe to use PayPal as long as the buyer uses the "Buy Now" button on the listing to make their payment. The only way a refund can be issued in this case is through Facebook Marketplace, which is one way to avoid PayPal scams . [13]
    • Paying with PayPal in some other way, such as via email, text, or in the PayPal app, is not recommended or protected by Facebook. If you get scammed for a transaction that went through PayPal directly and not through Facebook Marketplace, Facebook will not be able to help you recover the funds.
  2. 2
How do you pay on Facebook Marketplace? If you're buying an item that can be shipped, you can pay online through your bank account, PayPal, and other digital payment processors in some regions. If you're making an in-person exchange, you can pay with cash or the seller's preferred payment method. But before you make an off-FB Marketplace purchase, check out our guide to avoiding Facebook Marketplace scams .
  3. 3
What is the safest way to get paid on Facebook Marketplace? It's safest to get paid via Facebook directly, but you can only do that for shippable items. If you're making a sale in person, the best way to avoid fraud is to accept cash and to meet up at a safe, public location.
  4. 4
Will PayPal refund money if scammed? PayPal will refund money if you're scammed for certain qualified purchases, but not if you send money through the app using the free "friends and family" option. [14] Check out PayPal's Purchase Protection Program terms to learn more about which transactions are covered.
