Applying a hair mask is a great way to soften and smooth frizzy hair, boost shine, and nourish your locks. Depending on which ingredients you have on hand – or which appeal to you the most – there are several hair masks you can make. Try a yogurt and honey mask, supplemented with a drop of coconut oil. Another option is a banana hair mask, mixed with hair butter and raw honey. An avocado and egg yolk mask can make a real difference in hair luster, and even has restorative properties. Use one of these hair masks as needed, as often as once per week.

Method 1
Method 1 of 3:

Making a Yogurt and Honey Mask

  1. 1
Warm the coconut oil and yogurt in the microwave. Put some coconut oil into a small bowl and microwave it for about 30 seconds until it’s warm and in a liquid state, but not hot. [1] Then, warm up the yogurt in the microwave for 20-30 seconds to take off the chill. If it’s too cold, the yogurt can make the coconut oil harden again.
  2. Add yogurt and honey into a bowl with the coconut oil. Don’t use more coconut oil than the recommended amount, or your mask can leave your hair greasy. [2] Mix the ingredients together well.
    • Yogurt contains protein that nourishes the hair and makes it strong and healthy. Yogurt has moisturizing properties that make it a great natural conditioner, and it also contains lactic acid, which promotes hair growth. [3]
    • Honey is a humectant and an emollient, which means it can soften your hair, smooth your hair, and help your hair retain moisture. [4]
  3. Rub the mixture into your hair, beginning at your scalp and working down to the tips. Massage the mask into your scalp as well. Cover your hair with a shower cap, plastic bag, or shrink wrap. Allow the mask to sit for fifteen to twenty minutes. [5]
    • This may be a messy process. Ideally, apply the mask in the shower; otherwise, do so over a sink.
  4. Rinse out the mask completely. Shampoo your hair thoroughly, or else your hair may look greasy and residual yogurt left in your hair may go rancid. Skip conditioner, or apply it only to the ends of your hair. [6]
    • The mask is also a conditioning treatment, thus fully conditioning your hair isn’t necessary.

Method 2 of 3:

Using Banana, Honey and Hair Butter

  1. Combine banana baby food, hair butter, and raw honey. Instead of jarred baby food, you can puree ripe banana, and use four ounces of the pureed fruit. [7]
    • Banana that isn’t pureed – such as in baby food – is very difficult to remove from hair.
  2. Wet your hair until it is fully damp. Alternately, you can apply this mask after you wash your hair, before your hair fully dries. Coat your hair completely with the mixture. Cover your hair with a plastic bag or shower cap, and allow the mask to sit for 30 minutes. [8]
    • Bananas contain calcium, natural oils, and vitamins that nourish the hair and promote silkiness and shininess. The potassium in bananas also strengthens hair and helps to prevent breakage.
    • Honey is a humectant, meaning it can help your hair retain moisture. It’s also an emollient, so it can soften and smooth your hair. [9]
  3. Use cold or warm water to wash the mask completely from your hair. No shampoo or conditioner is necessary. You can dry and style your hair as usual.

Method 3 of 3:

Making an Avocado and Egg Mask

  1. Separate the yolks from the eggs, and break up the yolks with a fork or whisk. In a bowl, mix the egg yolks and avocado together well. [10]
    • You can also leave the egg whites in to give your hair some strengthening protein, or you can refrigerate them and use them later for cooking!
  2. Coat your hair with the mixture from roots to tips. Cover your hair with a plastic bag or shower cap. Let the mask sit for fifteen to twenty minutes. [11]
    • Egg yolks are rich in fats and proteins and naturally moisturize. Egg whites contain bacteria-eating enzymes that can remove unwanted oils from your hair. [12] Using an egg hair mask can restore shine and luster while repairing damage from hair breakage.
    • Avocados contain a long list of vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin B, C, E and K, magnesium, potassium, and omega-3 fatty acids. These vitamins and nutrients can make your hair softer and stronger, and also minimize or even eliminate frizziness and dry scalp. [13]
  3. Use cold or warm water to completely wash the mask from your hair. Shampoo your hair, then rinse out the shampoo. Follow up with conditioner, if desired. [14]
    • Shampooing is recommended because you don’t want any egg residue left in your hair afterwards.

Using products designed for your hair texture (straight or curly) can make a big difference. It's also important to avoid heat styling as much as possible and to use a clarifying shampoo once a month to remove styling product buildup.

Frizzy hair can be caused by dryness, ruffled cuticles, rough styling, or damage. Frizz happens when the hair is out of balance or roughed-up. To prevent it, you need to treat hair gently.

Treating damaged hair correctly depends on the cause, but it's always a good idea to add moisture and reduce heat styling. Using the right styling tools can also make a big difference. If you experience frizz frequently, try switching to a wide-tooth comb for curls or a boar-bristle brush to style straight hair.
