Puberty, pregnancy, and menopause are common times to see changes in color, texture, or curl pattern. QuestionHow do I dry my curly hair so it's not poofy?Laura Martin is a Licensed Cosmetologist based in Milledgeville, Georgia. She has been working as a hair stylist since 2007, and began a career as a cosmetology teacher in 2013. She worked as a teacher at Arrojo Cosmetology School, teaching cosmetology practices, hairstyling, and hair color application. Additionally, she received a BA in Creative Writing and Literature from New York University. The key to drying curls is not to disrupt them. Try twisting them into sections when they are still very wet, applying a curl enhancer or gel, then drying them with a diffuser. Do not scrunch or shake hair while diffusing, just lift the twists and set into the cup of the diffuser. Dry until 90% of the moisture is gone, then allow the remaining moisture to evaporate naturally.

QuestionMy hair used to be curly and beautiful, but after blow-drying my hair, it has become dry and frizzy. How can I fix it?Ashley Adams is a Licensed Cosmetologist and Hair Stylist in Illinois. She completed her Cosmetology education at John Amico School of Hair Design in 2016.You can fix your hair by blow drying your curls with a diffuser, rather than using a blow dryer without the diffuser attachment. To control the frizz, use hair serum along with a curl defining mousse, gel or cream. To control the dryness, use hair products that don’t contain alcohol or sulfates. Oil and moisture your hair, and also do deep conditioning treatments.

QuestionHow can I keep my natural curls from going away?Community AnswerMake sure you take good care of your hair. Condition when you wash and make sure to get hair trims often. Also, don't use a flat iron very often.
-
QuestionMy hair started out curly, but since age 4 it has looked straight. What can I do?Community AnswerUse a curly conditioner and don't use shampoo at all! I would suggest using "the twisting method" which consists of dividing your hair into two equal parts and then twisting them into little buns. Leave them in for at least one hour, then take them out and use a diffuser.
-
QuestionI have been straightening my curly hair for years and now I can not get my curls back. What can I do?Community AnswerIf you have damaged your curly hair by straightening it for years, you cannot get the curls back. You can use rollers or braid your hair overnight to make your hair temporarily curly. If you'd like to have your natural curl pattern back, you will have to let your hair grow out and eventually cut off the damaged ends. While your natural curls are growing out, you cannot straighten them or you will continue to damage them.
-
QuestionMy hair has beautiful curls when wet, but when it dries, it goes limp! I have tried enormous amounts of product that do not work. What can I do?Community AnswerWhen you get out the shower after washing your hair, get your hair in your hands and scrunch it up. Continue to do so as it dries. You can also use mousse.
-
QuestionHow do I keep my curly hair from going frizzy throughout the day?Community AnswerAvoid touching, brushing, or messing with your hair as the day going on. The more you fuss with your hair, the more you disrupt its natural curl pattern, which leads to frizz. Also, consider keeping a smoothing serum or natural oil (ie: Argan or coconut) in your purse of backpack. If your hair gets frizzy, apply a small amount to your hair to hydrate it and tame the frizz.
-
QuestionWhat if I have never had curly or kinky hair?Community AnswerIf you don't have naturally curly hair, you will likely end up with limp and/or frizzy waves. Embrace your natural hair, try a no heat curling option like curlformers, or check YouTube for other ideas.
-
QuestionWell what if you have naturally curly hair, and you want it to not be?Community AnswerThere's no way to change your natural hair permanently, but you can straighten it if you need to. Just make sure you are putting something in your hair to keep it straight, or else it will become curly again.

-
QuestionHow can I get permanent kinky hair with a 3A hair type?Community AnswerIf you have a natural 3A hair type, then you cannot have permanent kinky hair, but you could try a perm.
-
QuestionMy hair turns curly when it gets wet in the rain, but when I wet it in the shower it's straight. Why does this happen and how can I make it happen at home?Community AnswerWhile you are in the shower, your hair is weighed down by the water. After getting out of the shower, squeeze some of the water out of your hair so it's damp, but not dripping wet. Then use a spray leave-in conditioner (it's light so it won't weigh down your curls), mousse, gel, and a curl-defining cream (optional). After applying each product, you can comb through damp hair with a wide-tooth comb to distribute it evenly. Then turn your head upside down and scrunch your hair. Then wait for your hair to dry. Don't brush or comb it after drying, because you will ruin your curls.
-
QuestionWhat if my hair is really thick and can't hold curls very well?Community AnswerTry a lightweight curl-forming product. Put it in when your hair is wet and when you diffuse, try to set your roots upside down. Your hair weighs itself down and ruins curls/waves.
-
QuestionHow can I make my hair permanently wavy through the braiding method?Community AnswerYou can't make your hair permanently wavy. You'll have to braid it every time you want waves.
-
QuestionDoes this work for people with naturally straight hair?Community AnswerIt might not work as well. You can get more of a textured look, though. I do overnight curling methods that work just as well and look great. You could also get a perm.
-
QuestionMy hair is curly at the end but not on the roots/scalp. How can I curl my hair from roots to tips?Community AnswerYou can put your hair in two French braids over night. Take them out in the morning and you should have fuller curls.
-
QuestionWill this method work for people with relaxed hair?Community AnswerProbably not as well. Relaxers are designed to straighten your hair, so it will be hard to counteract that with natural methods.
-
QuestionWhat can I do to keep my natural curls if they are being impacted by frizz?Community AnswerUse some conditioner that is specified for curly hair, that you can purchase at a salon or supermarket. QuestionHow can I make my hair just a little bit curly?Community AnswerIf you don't have naturally curly hair already, then you can braid your hair overnight or use a curling wand and just brush out the curls a bit with your fingers. If you already have curly hair, use mousse, gel, and/or a curl-defining cream and lightly scrunch up your hair while it's damp.

QuestionMy hair has ringlet curls on the underside of my head, but on the top side all I have are waves! Any ideas on what I could do to make it the same tight spiral curls all throughout without using heat?Community AnswerI have the same problem. Put gel in your hair after showering, and scrunch your hair up. Make sure to put more gel on the parts that are less curly. Then, after waiting for your hair to air dry, if it's still wavy, dampen the wavy parts with water, apply some gel, and twist the hair around your finger tightly. Hold it there for a few seconds, then it should be somewhat curly.
