This may seem tricky, but fortunately, it works pretty much the same way as long division! Put a decimal point above the dividend on top of the division bar, directly over the point in the dividend. Then, pretend the point isn’t there and solve the problem as you normally would with 2 whole numbers. When you’re done, the decimal point will be in the correct place.

You’d do this basically the same way you do any other division in your head, except that you have to keep track of where the decimal point belongs. To make it easier, multiply both numbers by 10 (or some multiple of 10) to get the decimal point out of the way in the divisor. Once you’ve calculated the answer, mentally put the decimal point where it belongs above the decimal point in the dividend.

You don't need to move around the decimal if there isn't one in the divisor. Only if there is one in the divisor would you need to go around it.

Think of it as dividing 15 into 42.0. The answer will include a digit to the right of the decimal point.

Subtracting 29% is simply not the same thing as dividing by 1.29. Perhaps you're thinking of this: subtracting 29% is the same as multiplying by 71% (which is 100% - 29%).

When the divisor has a decimal point in it, move the decimal point to the right side of the right-most digit, and then move the decimal point in the dividend the same number of places to the right. In this case, 2.25 / 0.09 becomes 225 / 9, which equals 25. (When you move the decimal point the same number of columns in both the divisor and the dividend, the quotient is not affected. This is done to avoid dividing by a number containing a decimal point.)

Make it simpler by multiplying both the dividend and the divisor by 100, so that 3.65 / 1.26 = 325 / 126 = 2.8968, which rounds to 2.9.

Multiply both numbers by 100 to get rid of the decimal points. (That simplifies things without affecting the result.) Then 20/5 = 4.

Divide 2359 by 18, which is equal to approximately 130.6.

0.3 is called the divisor. You don't want a decimal point inside the divisor. So move the decimal point in the divisor one place to the right to get 3. Whatever you do to the divisor, you do the same thing to the dividend. Moving the decimal point in the dividend one place to the right changes the 2.4 to 24. Now you're dividing 3 into 24, which is 8. (All that movement of the decimal points doesn't affect the answer, as long as you do the same thing to both the dividend and the divisor.)

0.05 is 5/100, which is 1 /20. So 85 ÷ 1/20 = (85)(20/1) = 1700/1 = 1700.

The decimal point is placed right above the decimal point in the dividend (the number inside the division box). For example, if you divide 5 into 35.5, the quotient (without the decimal) is 71. The 7 goes right above the first 5 of the dividend, and the 1 goes right above the second 5. The decimal point in the quotient goes right above the dividend's decimal point, so that the final quotient is 7.1.

First multiply both numbers by 100 to get rid of the decimal in the divisor. (That does not change the result of the division.) So 28.9 / 0.85 is the same as 2890 / 85. Now use long division. The quotient is 34, with no remainder. (See Do Long Division .)
