    Expert Answer
Basic karate moves consist of punches, kicks, and blocks. Beginners typically focus on mastering these fundamental techniques. Punches and kicks serve as offensive maneuvers, while blocks are used to defend against incoming punches and kicks.
  • Question
When I chop will I break my hand?
    TheThinkingPanda Zhao
    Community Answer
No, the human bone is strong, but it will require lots of training. Do not attempt this if you have not been trained to do so.
  • Question
Is karate chopping boards going to help me fight in real life?
    Community Answer
Yes, it allows you to add diversity to your combat skills and is a fast technique to execute in a fight.
  • Question
What if I get a thick splinter in my hand after chopping?
    Community Answer
It is not likely that you would get a splinter from the types of boards that most karate schools use. If you try to break a random bit of wood, you will most likely get a splinter. If you do get a splinter, you can remove it with tweezers.
  • Question
How long does it take to break bricks?
    Community Answer
It depends on your training and dedication. It would typically take a good amount of time, as you have to work up to bricks from smaller challenges.
  • Question
Do I have to use all of my body weight?
    Community Answer
There is a sitting motion that goes with it. Done right with the proper technique (a quick drop using the thigh muscles and the falling of your weight), it can add some force to your hand that will help break the plank more easily.
  • Question
How do I perform the chop with a broken hand?
    Community Answer
You simply cannot use a broken hand for a karate chop. Just use the opposite, unbroken hand if possible. Otherwise, wait until your hand has healed fully and only with your doctor's advice.
  • Question
Should I be wearing a safety mask, or at least some goggles to make sure splinters don't fly up into my eyes?
    Aaditya Dhakal
    Community Answer
This depends. Most boards used in martial arts academies are extremely smooth and break into two neat pieces. If you try with a random piece of wood, you might need goggles. If the board is thin but not pliable, goggles, along with a leather glove, are recommended.
  • Question
How can I karate chop wood without getting injured?
    Community Answer
You won't get injured. The worst you will probably feel is pain. But keep trying because the technique and power is in your hips. Try staying calm. If it hurts to much stop, and try in another while.
