Sailor Moon is a beloved anime and manga character with powerful magical abilities that she uses to fight for love, justice, and the safety of her loved ones. She has an iconic look with a cute outfit, crescent-inspired jewelry, and enviably long hair, so we aren’t too surprised that you might want to draw her—whether that’s for a comic book, poster, or just for fun! The tutorials below will help you draw a full-body or portrait version of Sailor Moon, with beginner-friendly steps and helpful visuals.
Steps
Section 1 of 2:
How to Draw Sailor Moon (Full-Body)
-
1Draw an oval with 3 horizontal lines inside for her head and face. To start drawing the head, draw a short, slightly rounded oval near the top of your paper. Slightly above the horizontal midline of your oval, draw a just-barely curved horizontal line that stretches from one side to the other. [1] X Research source
- Do these steps in pencil. Later, you’ll want to erase these guidelines and go over the final drawing in ink or colored pencil.
-
2Draw 2 trapezoids—one right side up, one upside down—for the body. Start by drawing one trapezoid that’s upside down (i.e., the longest side is on top). Place this trapezoid 2–3 millimetres (0.079–0.118 in) below the oval head shape. About 0.5 inches (13 mm) below the bottom of this trapezoid, draw another one that’s right side up. The first trapezoid will outline Sailor Moon’s shoulders and the top of her torso, while the second one will outline her hips.Advertisement
-
Draw 5 lines and 4 small rectangles for the torso and limbs. Draw one slightly curved line from the bottom-center of the oval to the top of the lower trapezoid. This line should represent the natural curve of Sailor Moon’s spine (or torso). Then, draw two straight lines to represent the legs. Put a slight bend in each of these lines to represent the knees (or the separation between thigh and calf) and draw a small dot in each bend. [2] X Research source
- Draw an angled line from either side of the top trapezoid to represent the arms. Have one arm go from the trapezoid “shoulder” to the hip, with a sharp corner in it to represent the elbow. Have the other arm go from the other side of the trapezoid to the side of the head.
- Draw a dot on each “elbow” joint, just like you did for the knees.
- Draw four rectangles to represent the hands and feet at the end of each limb line. [3] X Research source
-
4Shape the oval into a realistic head, then draw the ears and neck. Sketch darker lines around the oval to create a more structured head—i.e., a pointed chin and straighter sides to the face. Draw a small, oval-shaped ear on either side of the head. For the neck, sketch two vertical lines to connect either side of the chin to the top of the “shoulder” trapezoid. [4] X Research source
-
5Draw Sailor Moon’s choker and the top part of her outfit. Sketch a shallow V-shaped neckline starting at the top corners of the upper trapezoid. Draw a large bow at the dip of the V-neck. Draw another, smaller V-shape inside the first one—this will create Sailor Moon’s collar. Then, draw a small rectangle at the bottom of her neck to sketch her choker necklace. [5] X Research source
- For the sleeve on the lifted arm, draw a narrow crescent shape with a same-sized oval right next to it—this oval is the arm hole, so make sure it aligns with the arm lines you sketched earlier. [6] X Research source
- For the sleeve on the arm that’s resting on the hip, draw two narrow crescent shapes right next to each other (still making sure that they align with the arm line so it looks like the arm is coming out of the sleeve). [7] X Research source
-
6Draw Sailor Moon’s pleated skirt. Draw a V-shape with lines that begin at the top corners of the lower trapezoid. Draw another, parallel V-shape and connect them to create the belt on Sailor Moon’s skirt. Then, sketch short, curved lines extending from the belt to create pleats. Connect each of these vertical, curved lines with shorter horizontal lines to finish the hem of the skirt. [8] X Research source
-
7Shape the arms and legs around your outline. Draw arm and leg shapes around the line guides that you sketched out earlier. Make them more rounded and less angular than your lines, but have them follow the same directions and angles. When you draw the legs, make the calves slightly longer than the thigh—this isn’t realistic, but it will give Sailor Moon her characteristically tall and long-legged look. [9] X Research source
-
8Draw both hands—one in a peace sign, and one resting on the skirt. For the raised hand, sketch out a peace sign that Sailor Moon is holding in front of her forehead. For the peace sign, draw the extended middle and index fingers with the pinky, ring, and middle fingers folded. You can hide the other hand behind the skirt, or draw it so that it’s resting on her hip with just a few fingers poking out. [10] X Research source
-
9Shape the feet and sketch in V-shaped lines for Sailor Moon’s boots. Shape the rectangular boxes at the end of each leg into boot shapes. Make one boot into a pointed oval, as if she’s pointing it downward and we can only see the top of the boot. Draw the other boot from a side angle with a square heel and pointed toe. For the top of each boot, draw an inverted “V” right below the knee. Draw another inverted “V” right under the first one to create the trim at the top of the boot. [11] X Research source
- For added design detail, draw a small semicircle at the top of each boot.
- For a more realistic look, draw short horizontal lines at the ankle and about halfway down the top of the foot (these are the spots where a shoe would naturally bend and crease). [12] X Research source
-
10Draw thin crescent shapes on the elbows for her gloves. At each elbow, draw three side-by-side crescent shapes (similar to how you drew the sleeves). These crescent shapes will create the ruffled tops of her gloves—she should have one glove on each hand. [13] X Research source
-
11Draw a V-shaped diadem and crescent bangs on her forehead. Draw two “V” shapes to create a diadem at the very top of Sailor Moon’s forehead. Then, draw small, curved, and connected crescent shapes around the top of her forehead to create her bangs (which should slightly cover up the diadem). Make sure that the crescents on each side of the head face different directions so that they give a curled, symmetrical appearance. [14] X Research source
-
12Draw 2 hair buns and long, curved lines on both sides for ponytails. Sailor Moon typically appears with two long ponytails—one on either side of her head. First, build the hair up from the bangs to give it a natural, rounded shape. Then, on the top of each side of the hair, draw a small circle to represent a hair bun. From each bun, draw a long line that slopes down and out before curving slightly inward and coming to a stop at mid-calf. [15] X Research source
- Shape the ponytails and give them a pointed, slightly curled tail at the bottom.
- Make sure the ponytails fall behind the arms and body.
-
Draw Sailor Moon’s nose, eyes, eyebrows, and lips. For each of her two eyes, draw a vertical oval with another vertical oval inside it. Draw a thin, rounded eyebrow line over the top of the eye, and draw three eyelash lines on the bottom of the eye. For the nose, draw a tiny and gently sloped triangle with its point facing toward the left. [16] X Research source For the mouth, draw an upside-down triangle with slightly rounded corners.
- If you want your Sailor Moon to have a closed mouth, just draw a slightly curved line in the center of her face (but below the nose). [17] X Research source
- Adjust the facial features as needed, using visual references, until they look as similar as possible to the cartoon.
-
Add any final detailing and colors to your Sailor Moon drawing. Add any extra details that you want to Sailor Moon’s face, hair, or outfit before completing your sketch—for example, you could draw a bow on the back of her dress, a brooch on the front of her dress, earrings coming down from her ears, and a crescent moon on her choker necklace. [18] X Research source You can also adjust any lines to make your drawing look more complete and realistic. Once you’re happy with the drawing, trace over the lines with black ink and erase any leftover pencil marks. [19] X Research source
- Then, you can color in your drawing! If you want to use traditional Sailor Moon colors, make her hair blonde and use red, white, and blue for her outfit.

Section 2 of 2:
How to Draw Sailor Moon (Portrait)
-
1Draw two curved lines that meet at a point to outline the face and chin. Sketch two lines to be the sides of the face. Have the lines gently slope toward each other until they meet at a gentle point (the chin). [20] X Research source
-
2Draw crescent- or wave-shaped lines to create Sailor Moon’s bangs. Sketch each lock of Sailor Moon’s bangs by drawing two curved lines that meet at a point (like a crescent or wave). Draw multiple locks side by side until you cover one half of the forehead. Repeat for the other side of the forehead, but flip the direction that the locks are curving toward. This way, the bangs will look curled inward and symmetrical. [21] X Research source
-
3Draw the top of the hair with multiple pairs of curved lines. Now, round out the top of the hair from the bangs to complete the head. Sketch pairs of curved lines that meet at sharp points to resemble pieces of hair on the sides of the head. Keep adding these lines until the hair looks sufficiently textured and connects to both sides of the head. [22] X Research source
-
4Draw a C-shaped ear on each side of the head. On each side of the head, draw a large “C” to outline the ear and connect it to the side of the head. Draw another, smaller “C” inside each ear to make it look more realistic. [23] X Research source
-
5Draw a pair of concentric circles on each side of the top of the head. Draw a circle on the top of each side of the head to represent her hair buns. Then, draw a smaller circle inside each circle. Sketch curved lines in the outside stripe of the concentric circle to create a banded pattern. These are Sailor Moon’s iconic hair buns! [24] X Research source
-
6Draw a pair of long, curved lines down from each side of the head. From each side of the head, draw two parallel but slightly curving lines that extend to the bottom of the page. Draw a diagonal line between each pair to give them more dimension. These are Sailor Moon’s very long ponytails! [25] X Research source
-
7Draw Sailor Moon’s neck with a crescent moon choker necklace. Sketch two short vertical lines on each side of the chin to create Sailor Moon’s neck. Close the bottom of the neck with two curved, horizontal lines to create a choker necklace. Draw a crescent moon on top of the choker. [26] X Research source
- Optionally, add crescent-shaped earrings to Sailor Moon’s ears.
-
8Draw Sailor Moon’s diadem, eyes, eyebrows, nose, and mouth. For the diadem, draw a thick V-shaped band, then draw an additional V-shape on the top and bottom of the original band. In the center of the band, draw an oval-shaped jewel. For the eyes, draw two large vertical ovals. Draw a smaller oval inside each of the two larger ones, then draw an even smaller one to be the highlight of the eye. Add 3-4 eyelashes to the bottom of each eye. For the nose, draw a slightly curved triangle that points left. Lastly, draw several curved lines to sketch the mouth, eyebrows, and upper eyelashes. [27] X Research source
-
9Trace your drawing in black ink before coloring it in. Go over your entire drawing in black and erase any pencil marks. Then, you can color your Sailor Moon in with colored pencils, crayons, or markers. To stick with her traditional colors, use a yellow shade for her hair, a blue shade for her eyes, and a red, white, and blue color scheme for her clothing and accessories. [28] X Research source
