Tyler Perry hasn't explicitly said how he identifies, but many fans believe he could be bisexual or gay. Until he publicly speaks out about his sexuality, it's best not to make assumptions.

Perry has never been married, but his longest-known relationship was with model, filmmaker, and activist Gelila Bekele, whom he met in 2007. She and Perry had a son together, Aman, born in 2014, and though they broke up in 2020, they remain friendly. Rumors have circulated that Perry and actress Tasha Smith (who has appeared in several of Perry's productions) could be or could have been romantically involved, but there has never been any proof that this is true.

In June 2025, actor Derek Dixon, who appears in Perry's political drama TV series The Oval , accused Perry of sexual harassment and assault, suing the Hollywood mogul for $260 million. These are still just allegations, but if they're true, it could suggest Perry isn't totally straight.

What do you if you're gay/lesbian and in a homophobic environment?
My family (even my extended family) are homophobic and the here is problem I'm lesbian. I haven't come out to them but dropped somewhat subtle hints. My dad is pretty homophobic and my mom would disapprove of me having a crush on anyone, let alone a girl. Generally everyone in my family would disgusted/confused/homophobic if I ever came out. On top of that, the girl I have a crush on is my best friend. She has shown signs of liking me back. Most of my friends know I have a crush on her, but I just haven't officially come out to them (they already kind of know). How am I supposed to come out to my family?

How do I tell if I'm lesbian or bisexual?
This quiz said I "might" be a lesbian. I definitely know that I like girls but I only sometimes think that I like guys. And while I think that some guys are attractive, I don't get butterflies thinking about them the same way I do when I think about women. Am I a lesbian or am I bisexual? How did you know that you're a lesbian?
