Discharge in my dog's eye. Are there any home remedies?

Are there any home remedies for eye discharge in dogs? My 6-year-old retriever is getting this kind of greenish gunk coming out of her eye. It doesn’t seem to bother her at all, she isn’t pawing at it or anything, but I’m also kind of worried it might turn into an infection. I don’t know, what should I do for her? I’ve been wiping the discharge away whenever I see it but it keeps coming back.

You should still see a vet ASAP even if it doesn’t seem to be bothering your dog. Eye issues require medical care, although the severity of the issue depends on what’s wrong with your dog’s eye. So, if it's like an ulcer or something that has irritated the eye, you're going to see things like discharge from the eye, you're going to see squinting, you might see some redness. With some of the other ocular disorders, your dog could go blind if the problem goes untreated. There may be some at-home meds or remedies you can use, but you must have your dog checked out by a vet first.

While I agree with all the comments, it's super easy to treat your pups eyes with a prescription from the vet, similar to pink eye in humans.

But if it is only daily eye goop - that happens to all dogs naturally to help keep their eyes moist and clean. Kind of like how when humans wake up in the morning with some crusties. The goop in the eye can be kind of gross to touch, and become stuck, I love to use a little fine tooth comb to remove everyday eye goobers.

Other way to help, gently soften the area with a warm, wet towel, rinse area daily and switch to filtered water.

What if you can’t afford to just rush to the vet! Not everyone has credit cards or even money in the bank

Maybe a clean cloth soaked in chamomile tea as a warm compress on your dog's closed eyes might help soothe it but I don't think it's worth trying to get home remedies to work when it comes to your dog's eyes. Much better to take your dog to a vet.

You can also just use warm water if you don't have chamomile tea.

You can try a sterile saline eye wash solution to clean the area once or twice a day and also make some kind of cone to keep your dog from pawing at it. I know you said she isn't pawing yet but it's better to be safe. Eye problems can get really serious so I'd recommend just using these tips for while you're waiting to have a vet appointment!

I would recommend seeing a vet. Your dog might have an eye infection that requires antibiotics to cure. My dog gets a lot of these infections.
