  • Question
How can I be sure my plate won't crack as a bottom to my mold?
    Community Answer
If you know the maker of the plate, you should be able to find out on the internet if it is heat-resistant. Sometimes the plate will say "oven safe" on the bottom as well.
  • Question
Why wasn't my cake cooked correctly after baking it for 35 minutes on a gas stove?
    Rachael Heywood
    Community Answer
Every oven is different. Try putting it on for a little longer next time.
  • Question
Will a gas stove be sufficient to cook a cake with?
    Community Answer
Yes, any type of stove should work.
  • Question
Can I use a bundt cake pan?
    Community Answer
I wouldn't recommend this. It might not cook evenly due to the pan's shape, and since it doesn't have a fitted cover, the heat may not be efficiently trapped.
  • Question
I just put on the cake with the steel cake pan on the stove. Will that work?
    Community Answer
No. The bottom of the cake will most likely burn before the rest of the cake is completely cooked through.
  • Question
Does this mean steaming the cake?
    Community Answer
Kind of, because it vaporizes the water in the batter, but in another sense, not really since you're not putting water in the pot.
  • Question
Can the cake be overdone if it takes longer than the recommended 35-40 minutes?
    Community Answer
It takes as long as it takes. The cooking time may vary depending on the stove, pot, etc. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get overdone.
  • Question
What types of plates should I avoid using?
    Community Answer
I would avoid using plastic plates as those will melt in the pot. Use either glass or ceramic plates.
  • Question
Can I use a plate or bowl as a stand/rack?
    Community Answer
You can use a plate, but a bowl is doubtful. You can use anything as long as it has an appropriate shape and size and is made of safe material.
  • Question
Can I use a hot plate to bake the cake?
    Community Answer
Yes, you can, although you may need to adjust the heat a little bit.
  • Question
Can I use a baking sheet on top of the pot?
    Community Answer
Yes, as long as the cake pan stands even in the pot.
  • Question
Can I pour sand inside the pot and put my baking pot on top?
    Community Answer
No, I would not recommend this.
  • Question
Some recipes suggest spreading salt at the bottom of the cooker before placing the rack on it. Why does that help? Doesn't the salt spurt on drying or damage the cooker?
    Vicky Victoria Jolina Modelling Iliaens
    Community Answer
No it won't do any damage at all. It is an old 'trick' used to prevent the heat from spreading too much on the pot itself but also helps to keep the bottom heated, as salt and sand both absorb heat. Unlike sugar, it stays in its same solid form as tiny, natural crystals. This way is certainly not necessary, but if your cake frequently doesn't cook evenly it can help to bake it more evenly. Another benefit is that if you use 'old' pots, more like pots covered with a certain material and print, this method prevents damage to such cooking gear.
  • Question
What is meant by inserting a knife?
    Community Answer
To determine whether or not your cake is fully cooked, you can stick a clean knife into the middle of the cake. If the knife comes out clean, the cake is cooked. If it comes out with a lot of cake on it, then your cake should go back into the oven.
  • Question
Can you do this with a cast iron casserole pan?
    Community Answer
No, this is not recommented. The cast iron pan won't fit into the steamer basket/glass dish. You also shouldn't use it in place of the pot because it's not deep enough.
  • Question
Do I have to add the beans?
    Community Answer
Yes, otherwise the bottom of the cake pan will get too hot. If you don't have any dried beans, you can try using some sort of metal stand, such as the ring from a mason jar lid. Basically, anything that will create a barrier between the cake pan and the steamer basket/glass dish.
  • Question
Can I use an aluminum pie pan?
    Community Answer
You can try using that instead of the cake pan, but you still need to put a steamer basket or glass dish on top of the main pot.
  • Question
Can I use a nonstick pot for baking?
    Community Answer
Yes, you can. It will help you to remove the cake easier when it is fully baked.
