I cannot change my BIOS settings. I can still access it, but it's all grayed out. I can only change the date and time. What can I do to fix this?
    TFG
    Community Answer
If all your BIOS items are grayed out (but you can still access it), you probably have the administrator (or setup) password set. To unlock your BIOS, go to the Security tab , find the "Unlock Setup" (or similar) row and type your password into the box. Note that if you enter the password wrong 3 times, you will have to restart your computer, enter the BIOS and then try again.

The BIOS is where you get the option to boot up with the logo; unfortunately, not every BIOS offers the option to eliminate that. (The logo might be called the "splash screen.")

How can I install USB WiFi?
    Community Answer
If the USB antenna needs its own driver on top of the Windows defaults, a good idea would be to download it into a different device, and send it over to your own computer (be it on a USB drive, a disc, or any other method.) In any other case, Windows *should* run the USB antenna by itself.
  • Question
What are the bios set up?
    Rudy Toth
    Community Answer
BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System. BIOS sets up your computer drives in a sequence to run your computer efficiently. Without BIOS you wouldn't be able to boot up your computer it would remain dormant. BIOS commands run the computer in a string series sequence what to start first well then what do you think starts first? Drives are the answer. C:\ drive which is your main drive of your computer then it goes to the next drive D:\ which is your CD-ROM drive and so forth this in return boots up your machine. You must be careful when using BIOS if you change the settings incorrect, then you won't be able to boot up your computer until you change those values.

It sounds like your laptop does not have an operating system installed. This means you will either have to purchase a copy of Windows or use an open source Linux distribution (Linux distros are free to download and can be installed from a USB). If your daughter is not tech savvy, consider purchasing a Windows license and opting for a pre-made USB installer being sent from Microsoft.

How do I find the BIOS settings for my motherboard?
    Johnson Saji
    Community Answer
Based on your manufacturer, you will have to press the key that the splash screen startup tells you to press to get to the BIOS. For my HP computer, I have to restart my computer, press the ESC key, then I have press F10 to get to the BIOS. If you do not see the key to getting to the BIOS, try looking at your manual. If you still do not see the BIOS, follow these steps. 1. On your Windows OS, press the keys Win + R to open Run. 2. Type in 'msinfo32' to open your system information. 3. Find the BIOS Mode. If your computer is UEFI, you might not have the BIOS Setup. Instead, you would have the UEFI Setup. Try searching up 'How to access the UEFI'.

  • Question
An operating system wasn't found, how can I try disconnecting some drivers without an operating system?
    Community Answer
It seems like you'll need to do a fresh install of an operating system on your PC. Ask a friend to let you use their computer in order to make a bootable USB drive (Plenty of guides on YouTube) with the OS that you want, plug it into your PC, and install the OS from there. For PCs that don't like USB installations (such as some older laptops) you can do the same on one or more CDs.

  • Question
My computer is asking for a proper boot device and it is not starting. What should I do?
    Community Answer
If possible, ask for help grabbing a backup of any important data (or do it yourself if you already know how to), because it sounds like you'll have to reinstall your OS. Ask a friend to lend you their PC so that you can make a bootable USB drive using it, and plug that drive into your PC. You'll be able to reinstall the OS from there, and given the option to keep personal data or erase it. This is why I mentioned a backup earlier - If the Keep option doesn't let you correctly install an OS, you'll have to delete all data from that drive.
