If the divorce happened recently, you should give her some time to come to terms with it. She may want answers. Ask her if she has questions and answer them honestly but with empathy. Remind her that her parents are always there for her, but don't push her if she needs some space.

The sooner she comes to terms with her new circumstances, the better. It will hurt for a while and the pain may never go away completely, but I would encourage you have a talk with her about this right away.

Your husband is still fully responsible for her well-being now; that's not news, obviously, and it's a good thing. But you should offer her any help she needs to get through this depression. Talk to your husband, if possible to her mother as well; decide on a plan on how to cope with this. Most importantly, talk to the girl herself - it's her life, her feelings. But remember you are married to her father, not to her; try to avoid letting what happens in her life affect what happens between you and him.

  • Question
My daughter separated from her husband in 2017. Her husband filed for divorced and she filled up the document and they're waiting for it to be final. What do I need to do when she's always respectful to me?
    Community Answer
Respect your daughter's decision. If you want to impose your opinions, ask respectfully if she'd like to hear them. Don't force her to change her decision. If she says that she doesn't want to live with her husband, then respect her decision. You can ask her to change her opinion, but if she doesn't want to, then don't force her. Just let her know you are there to support her with anything she needs.
  • Question
I think the holidays are extremely hard for my daughter, her cousins just had babies, and I think my daughter is sad because she wanted kids too. What can I do?
    Community Answer
If your daughter is sad because she hasn't found Mr. Right to start having children with, remind her that it will be her turn one day. If it is due to a medical condition, this can be particularly difficult. Nowadays, single women are able to adopt or foster children. If she has the ability and resources, she could consider in vitro fertilization and raising the child on her own. Others, such as myself, choose to go the route of adopting a dog. It is not the same as a child, but a pet can give the love and affection that she may be craving.
