  • Question
My mother found my diary and is mad at me. What should I do?
    Community Answer
Tell her it's your diary, and that she shouldn't be so nosy. If she continues to stare directly into your diary, find a place she never goes, and put it there.
  • Question
My friends read my diary, and I let them, but sometimes I write my deepest feelings and I don't want them to know, what should I do?
    Community Answer
Perhaps you could keep two diaries - one to write down your deepest feelings and keep to yourself, and another to write about other things you don't mind sharing with your friends. Otherwise, you'll have to either tell your friends you're not comfortable showing them your diary anymore, or stop writing things you don't want them to see.
  • Question
I want to hide my diary from my brother and parents. I do not have such hiding places to be safe, as they go through my things. What should I do?
    Community Answer
If you've started school, take your diary with you and keep it in your backpack. If you have a computer or mobile device, you can keep your diary there and password-protect it.
  • Question
I want a diary, but I don't have any money and my parents will know I have one if they buy it. What should I do?
    Community Answer
Just tell your parents you need an extra notebook for school, or for writing down study timetables. This way they won't know it's a diary.
  • Question
Can I take it to school and quickly remove it after school, since my dad looks through my bag? He does it just to make sure of my tests and stuff, not to be nosy.

    Community Answer
You can, but if he's at home when you get home from school or he picks you up at school, he might find it weird that you run at your room every time you arrive home. Be careful.
  • Question
What if my diary is big? I can't take it to school without it being noticed.
    Community Answer
Put into a hollow book, or cover it like it's a textbook.
  • Question
What do I do if I want to keep a secret diary, but I can't take it to school and someone always goes through my stuff?
    Community Answer
Keep it at home! Find somewhere to put it where it's unlikely to be found, like in your drawer under some clothes, or on a bookshelf behind some other books so it's not visible. You could even move it every couple of days so it's less likely to be found.
  • Question
What do I do if my parents found my hidden diary and I'm mad at them?
    Community Answer
Wait until you've calmed down to talk to them. Then let them know that you feel like it was a violation of your privacy for them to read your diary, and ask them to refrain from doing that in the future.
  • Question
Can I use Japanese as code if my family doesn't read Japanese?
    Community Answer
Using a language that you are fluent in is certainly a good idea especially one where the alphabet isn't the same to English. However, it is clearly easy to decode if they know someone who speaks that language.
  • Question
What do I do if my sibling found my diary and told my parents? What do I do if my parents are mad at me for what was in my diary?
    Community Answer
All of the members of your family were inconsiderate and violated your privacy, and it's you who should be upset. They knew that this was something private, and yet they searched out and read it. Ask your family members how they would like it if you stole their phones and went through them, then got mad about what you found. Consider talking with your school counselor or trusted adult about the best ways you can protect your privacy, and check out the tips in Handle People Who Repeatedly Violate Boundaries .
  • Question
I have a babysitter who cleans everything. What are some places where someone wouldn’t clean?
    Community Answer
Someone wouldn't clean under a mattress or in an attic.
  • Question
Every time I leave my diary on my bed, my mum opens it, reads it and gets mad at me for what I have written. What do I do?
    Community Answer
Don't leave your diary on your bed. Tell your mum that your diary is your personal space, your place to vent. It might also be a good idea to discuss with your mum some of the issues you've raised in your diary.
  • Question
What should I do if my father forces me to let him read my diary?
    Community Answer
Tell your father that it is your personal diary, and you don't want anyone reading it. If he still insists on reading it, you'll just have to let him. If he's a mature person, he'll be respectful about whatever he reads there. It could possibly even improve your relationship with him.
  • Question
My room is very small and I have little to no hiding places. Should I tape it to the ceiling of the cabinet under the bathroom sink?
    Community Answer
Yes, but be very careful. It might not seem like a problem if the other people in your house never look in there except possibly to get a quick toiletry, but if someone suddenly has to look closer under there for any reason, such as if the sink needs to be fixed, your diary will get found out. If someone looks through the cabinet and they locked the bathroom door, then you probably won't have time to retrieve it. It might also be filthy in there too. So, make sure you have other places to hide it and change those places regularly. You might try other cabinets that are less likely to be used.
  • Question
I have a babysitter who cleans everything… what are some places where someone wouldn’t clean?
    Community Answer
Wrap your diary in saran wrap or put it in a plastic bag, and hide it in the bottom of a house plant (put the pot in a decorative pot), or if they never take the trash from your trashcan, tape the bag to the inside of your trashcan, under the trash bag. Another place is inside a drawer, taped in a bag underneath the drawer, no one cleans there.
  • Question
My brother keeps threatening to read my diary, and I have very personal things in there. How can I make him stop?
    Community Answer
Tear the pages that have personal stuff on them off or scribble over them. Then show your brother your diary. Next time, use code words for stuff that's really embarrassing (for example, when you write about a boy you have a crush on, say your favorite food or animal instead). You could also create a diary that he can't ever find, such as a private Tumblr blog.
  • Question
Can I hide my diary in my underwear shelf?
    Community Answer
That's a good place to hide it but be wary during laundry, if your mom puts your clothes away for you.
  • Question
How do I get my mom to stop reading my diary? I already chatted with her twice but she didn't listen. She said no, she won't stop reading my diary and is really nosy.
    Sophey RIchardson
    Top Answerer
You can keep your diary at school in your locker and write in it during recess or during any break through the school day. Make sure you don't tell your mom how to open your locker though.
  • Question
My mom knows my diary code, what should I do?
    Community Answer
Change the code when she isn't looking.
  • Question
How can I write in my diary if my parents never let me close my door and lock it? My sister gets very snoopy when I don't let her see things I'm doing.
    Community Answer
Get a blank journal and label it diary. This can be your fake copy. Your sister and parents will think it is your real diary and just think that it hasn't been used yet. Hide your real copy under your mattress, in your pillow case or between books on your bookshelf.
  • Question
I can't make a decoy that looks like my true copy what do I do?
    Community Answer
It doesn't have to look exactly like it. For a decoy diary, just get any real-looking diary that would be fitting for you to keep. For example, if you really love flowers, then get a decoy diary with flowers on the cover. Then hide the true diary or disguise the true diary as a non-diary. You could say that you have a new diary because you like the new design better.
  • Question
My dad read my diary and his excuse is “Since this is OUR house, I can look through your things whenever I want”. How do I tell him I don’t feel comfortable with that?
    Sophey RIchardson
    Top Answerer
I have the same problem too! If you think he would understand, then tell him that you don't feel that he has the need to look through your journal. Maybe tell him that if there would be something bad or dangerous that you would write about, you would tell him about it first. Make him understand that you only write about things that are important to you, not anything life threatening.
  • Question
My dad found my diary and told me it was silly to keep a diary. What should I do?
    Community Answer
Continue your diary if that's what you want. Keeping a diary can be very constructive. Your dad is welcome to his opinion, but it's just an opinion.
  • Question
Why would someone want to hide their diary?
    Community Answer
Usually, people want to keep their diary a secret because they write about sensitive topics. Examples include embarrassing topics (like puberty or crushes), inappropriate topics that can get a person in serious trouble (such as kissing), and hurtful/offensive remarks about other people such as classmates and parents.
  • Question
I have a strong code used for my online diary, but my father can still open it. What should I do?
    Community Answer
Are you really sure that your password is "strong"? If your father figured it out, it's most likely because you used a common phrase or something that he knows about. Change your password to something random that your family would never suspect. A strong password would be something that doesn't contain any phrases that are associated with you.
  • Question
Where would I hide my diary in a hotel room?
    Community Answer
If you have your own backpack or suitcase, you can hide it in there. In a hotel room, you can hide it under your pillow or in a dresser if you aren't sharing it with anyone.
  • Question
Can I use these methods to hide a fanfiction journal? I'm shy and a bit embarrassed that I write fanfiction.
    Community Answer
Yes. This article will work for any personal diary you don't want other people looking in. It doesn't matter what the private writing is exactly. You can also post your fanfiction online and with a username that has nothing to do with you. FanFiction.net is the perfect place, and you don't need to pay money or use your real name when signing up.
  • Question
Should I write stuff about my personal life that I don't want my parents to find out about in my diary?
    Community Answer
It's up to you. If you can keep your diary safe, go ahead. This will be tricky, however, as you'd need to hide/disguise it at all times, and if your parents clean your room and accidentally find it, it can get problematic. But if you don't want to risk it, I'd recommend trying an online diary. Online diaries and blogs can be set to private and are totally secure as you need a password to access it. Nobody can find or even search for your online diary especially if you never talk about it anywhere. You can use the online diary for your secret personal stuff and a physical diary for entries you don't mind other people seeing.
  • Question
What if one of my parents snoops in my diary at home without my permission while I'm at school?
    Community Answer
Bring your diary with you when you go to school. Don't leave it behind, as this will make it very easy for someone to find it when you're not looking after it. Disguise your diary as a school book and don't make a big deal or act suspicious about it. Nobody will suspect a thing.
  • Question
What if your diary is big and and puffy, and you can't hide it in the closet or the bed?
    Community Answer
Try to (gently) tear out pages as you write them. After you do this, fold them up, then hide them in a box under your bed.
