QuestionWhy can't I use regular containers for gasoline?Jay Goninen is an Automotive Expert and the Co-Founder and President of WrenchWay. Jay started working in his family's repair shop when he was nine and has been deeply passionate about the industry since then. He has experience as a technician and is currently a Board Member for both the Diesel Technology Program at Madison Area Technical College and the Community Alliance for the Skilled Trades.Using approved containers when storing gasoline is essential for various reasons. These containers are specifically designed to safely contain flammable liquids like gasoline, minimizing the risk of leaks, spills, and vapors escaping, thereby reducing the potential for accidents, fires, and injuries. They also ensure compliance with local regulations and safety standards, preventing potential fines or penalties. Approved containers are durable, and built to withstand the corrosive nature of gasoline and the stresses of transportation and storage, providing long-lasting reliability. By preventing contamination and protecting the environment from spills and leaks, these containers contribute to the responsible handling and storage of gasoline, prioritizing safety, compliance, durability, and environmental protection.

QuestionIs a gas can supposed to be vented?Ryan BacigalupiCommunity AnswerYes, gas cans should be vented, as the fuel vapors expand and contract as temperature changes. With this being said, make sure to store gas away from any possible flame sources (heater, water heater, etc.) and keep away from sparks. They should ideally be stored in a well-ventilated location to prevent buildup of gas fumes.

QuestionShould the opening on the back of the handle be open or closed?Community AnswerKeep it closed so nothing bad gets in. Store it with fuel stabilizer. The back vent is to remove pressure when fueling a vehicle.

QuestionCan you store gasoline in a milk jug for a short time?Vassily KniggeCommunity AnswerYou can store gas in a plastic milk jug only if you cleaned the jug out very well and let the inside dry. Then, you would only use this gas in something like a lawnmower and NOT in something like a car. This does carry a risk because gas cans have thicker plastic which can withstand more heat and are less likely to leak from the cap.

QuestionCan you put gas in a blue can?Vassily KniggeCommunity AnswerYes, you can, just make sure that there hasn't been any kerosene in it or it will contaminate the gas. Make sure no one else uses it though because they could put it in a lamp and it could blow up because gas has a higher burning rate.

QuestionI have a very small amount of gasoline in a broken leaf blower. What can I use to to store the gasoline drained from the blower?Vassily KniggeCommunity AnswerYou can use a plastic bottle unless it is not clean. If not, then clean the bottle and make sure it is dry.

QuestionDoes that mean opening the small vent in the upper back of a gas can while stored at my house?Vassily KniggeCommunity AnswerThe vent in the rear of the gas can is to help the flow of the gas to come out the other end. You want to close all opening to prevent gas from leaking (in fumes) and to prevent dust and dirt getting in the gas tank.

QuestionAre gasoline fumes heavier than air, so they sink, or are they light so they rise?Knigva23Community AnswerGas fumes have a higher density than air so they would sink. It would help to spread these fumes apart if you were outside with wind.

QuestionIs it safe to place a full gerry can in a metal garbage can and cover the top of the metal garbage can?Knigva23Community AnswerYes, it is likely it would be safe as long as it does not sit outside because metals are good conductors for not only heat but electricity as well. The garbage can could get very hot from sitting outside. Also, high temperatures make particles expand and create lots of pressure in the tank.
