You have attitude if you: Speak your truth You say what’s on your mind, even if others disagree. Examples: “I completely disagree. That movie dragged on way too long.” “This music sounds like a bunch of blenders.” Are independent You don’t care about getting attention or approval from others. Examples: “I like being by myself because I don’t have to listen to anyone.” “People annoy me, like, 75% of the time.” Ask questions You question authority in a genuinely curious and/or playful manner because you’re an independent thinker. Examples: “Why should I have a curfew if she gets to stay out all night?” “Why should I take notes if what you’re saying is not relevant to my life and overall happiness?” Have swagger You carry yourself like you’re the coolest person in the room and you don’t care what others think about you. Examples: * You walk with your head held high * You make too much or too little eye contact * You cross your arms and walk with a distinctive gait * Your style and dress is alternative and unique You’re being rude if you: Go out of your way to tear others down You constantly make a dedicated effort to insult others in order to feel superior. Examples: “I came all the way over here to tell you how much you suck and should just give up completely.” “I feel it’s my duty to remind you every day how useless and ugly you are.” Bully others You are always looking on someone to belittle and take pleasure in their fear and misery. Examples: “I love watching you squirm, just like the little insignificant worm you are.” “You better not scamper home because after school my fist has a date with your face later.” Make excuses for causing serious harm You consistently refuse to accept responsibility if someone gets seriously hurt (physically or emotionally) by your words or actions. Examples: “It’s not my fault you’re too sensitive. I’m just blunt.” “It’s not my fault your body happened to get in the way of my foot.” Violate others Purposefully discriminating against others by calling them names or making aggressive gestures at them is beyond rude—it’s abusive and appalling. Examples: * Hate speech * Crude jokes or comments about someone’s ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, body, religion, and physical or mental illness * Physically harming or harassing others
