Donny is a high-school dropout who supports himself by working as an underling for a group of criminals running an underground dogfighting ring. He does grunt work like collecting money after fights, ushering out unruly gamblers, and, his least favorite responsibility, cleaning up after the fights. After one particularly brutal fight, in which one dog savages another to the point of nearly cutting it in half, Donny is particularly disheartened. He heads home, noticing about halfway that several dogs are following him. By the time he gets home, it’s thirty or more. An hour inside and he can barely see the sun out the window for all the bloody, snarling dogs blocking the glass. He thinks he’s going nuts. Then a window cracks. He barricades himself in the bathroom, thinking of everything he had done. When the hinges break, he cries, and the story ends.
