Cite an Essay in Chicago Manual of Style Format
In-text citation:
In Chicago style, you have two options for in-text citations: footnotes or author-date citations. Here are examples of both:
Footnote style:
Include a superscript number at the end of the sentence, after any punctuation marks. The corresponding footnote will contain the full citation information.
Example:
"The art of essay writing is a skill that can be developed."^1
Author-date style:
Include the author's last name, publication year, and page number (optional) in parentheses at the end of the sentence, before any punctuation marks.
Example:
According to Doe (2022, 45), "the art of essay writing is a skill that can be developed."
Bibliography entry:
For the bibliography entry, include the following information in the given order:
Author's Last Name, First Name.
"Title of Essay."
In Title of Book or Anthology, edited by Editor's Name(s), page range of the essay.
Place of publication: Publisher, Year.
Example:
Doe, John. "The Art of Essay Writing." In Essays on Literature, edited by Jane Smith, 45-60. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2022.
Note: If the essay is from an online source, include the URL and the date of access at the end of the citation.
Example (online source):
Doe, John. "The Art of Essay Writing." In Essays on Literature, edited by Jane Smith, 45-60. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2022. Accessed May 12, 2023. www.example.com/essays/art-of-essay-writing.
Remember to italicize the title of the book or anthology in the bibliography entry.
