Template to Cite Dialogue in MLA
In-Text Citation:
For a direct quote, include the speaker's name and the page number in parentheses: (Last Name 45).
For an indirect quote, include only the speaker's name in parentheses: (Last Name).
Example of a direct quote:
"John said, 'I cannot believe this is happening to us'" (Smith 35).
Example of an indirect quote:
John stated that he was surprised by the situation (Smith).
Works Cited Entry:
Start with the speaker's name, followed by a period.
Place the dialogue in quotation marks.
Indicate the source of the dialogue, which can be a book, play, movie, or other source, with proper formatting.
Include the page number or range of pages where the dialogue appears.
Example of a works cited entry for a book:
Smith, John. The Great Gatsby. Scribner, 2004, p. 35.
Example of a works cited entry for a play:
Shakespeare, William. Romeo and Juliet. Edited by Brian Gibbons, Oxford University Press, 2009, pp. 42-44.
